Port Tampa Bay and Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office Acquire New Port Security Boat

Port Tampa Bay and its law enforcement partner, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO), unveiled a new marine security vessel during a ceremony last week on the waterfront near the Tampa Convention Center.

The 40 foot Intrepid patrol vessel is designed and equipped with capabilities that detect chemical, biological, radiation, nuclear, and explosive devices. The $653,100 purchase price was financed by a $489,825 federal port security grant obtained through the port authority. The balance was paid by the port under the cost sharing requirements of the grant.

The boat will be operated by the Sheriff’s Office, which will also cover operating and maintenance costs.

"This beautiful new vessel brings us to a new level of port safety and represents the most advanced marine vessel technology available to civilian law enforcement," Port President & CEO Paul Anderson said. "Our port is extremely large and diverse, and the waters of Tampa Bay provide a challenging environment from a security standpoint. This new Intrepid allows our port law enforcement team to provide a higher and more effective standard of monitoring."
