The first ship carrying autos manufactured at a new KIA plant in Monterrey, Mexico, is due to dock at the Port of Philadelphia on July 3. Loaded at the Port of Altamira, the approximately 1,000 new KIA automobiles will be driven ashore from the brand new car carrier Glovis Sirius at the Packer Avenue Marine Terminal.
KIA’s Monterrey plant began production of compact sedans in mid-May and is expected to assemble around 100,000 vehicles by the end of the year. Holt Logistics projects that approximately 35,000 of these vehicles will come directly to the Port of Philadelphia annually. This new business is expected to create up to 100 additional jobs at the Packer Avenue facility.
"Today’s announcement reinforces our commitment to Philadelphia and further demonstrates the value of productive relationships with our partners in Korea and Mexico," said Thomas J. Holt, Jr., of Holt Logistics Corp., terminal operator at Packer Avenue. "We are very excited about expanding imported automobile services on the Philadelphia waterfront. Auto imports into Packer Avenue have increased steadily over the past six years. On behalf of Holt Logistics Corp, we thank GLOVIS and look forward to fostering this relationship with them and our partners at the Philadelphia Regional Port Authority for years to come."
Port Everglades, Crowley Liner Services Renew Long-Term Agreement
Crowley Liner Services has entered into a 10-year, $157.8 million lease and operating agreement with the Broward County Board of County Commissioners for a 99-acre marine terminal at Port Everglades. The agreement includes two five-year extension options.
The lease agreement combines Crowley's original 74-acre leasehold with the 25-acre SeaFreight leasehold, which Crowley acquired in October 2015.
During FY 2015, Crowley moved 145,940 containers through Port Everglades, generating nearly 29 percent of the port's total container revenue. During the same period, SeaFreight moved 41,801 containers.
Based on the projected level of activity by lease year six, the port calculates the Crowley agreement will:
• Support 1,208 direct and 1,995 indirect and induced local jobs
• Produce $209.5 million in personal income
• Yield $306 million in business services revenues
• Generate $103 million in local purchases
• Deliver approximately $19.5 million in state and local taxes
"Crowley became the first tenant in our Southport container terminal complex in January 1990, and has grown, and restructured, the terminal from its original 55.54 acres to become our largest marine terminal operator. We value our long-term partnership with Crowley Liner Services and appreciate the company's flexibility as Port Everglades continues to expand for future growth," said Port Everglades Chief Executive Steven Cernak, PPM®.
Sept-Îles Port Authority Initiates Legal Proceedings against Champion Iron Mines
The Sept-Îles Port Authority has served Champion Iron Mines Ltd. with a notice of arbitration under the mechanism provided for in the port’s multi-user dock contract.
The port seeks to compel Champion to fulfill its contractual obligations and to pay in full the buy-in payment of $19,581,000 plus interest agreed upon in the contract.
The arbitration will take place in accordance with Quebec province’s Code of Civil Procedure, which establishes the process for nominating an arbitrator and conducting the arbitration.
Five users signed the contract in 2012 for the construction of the new dock. The port authority says it has been "unduly burdened by significant and unexpected financial costs" because of Champion’s refusal to make the buy-in payment in 2013 and is "seeking to protect its interests and those of the contract’s other partners by reminding Champion of its responsibility to fulfill its contractual obligations."
Aside from its dispute with Champion, the port intends to continue working closely with the Quebec government through its limited partnership with Société ferroviaire et portuaire de Pointe-Noire "to provide a quick stimulus to Pointe-Noire’s assets and make the multi-user dock operational."
Located on the north shore of the Gulf of St. Lawrence, Sept-Îles is one of North America’s leading iron ore ports, with volume in 2015 amounting to 22 million metric tons.
