Port of San Francisco Announces Rod Iwashita as New Chief Harbor Engineer
Rod K. Iwashita joined the Port of San Francisco as chief harbor engineer, effective May 15.
An experienced engineering manager and marine structures engineer, he has extensive expertise in seismic analysis and retrofit design of piers and wharves, development of waterfront sites and inspection and rehabilitation of marine structures.
As chief harbor engineer, Iwashita is responsible for developing, planning and directing the work of the port’s engineering division, which oversees several major functions including building and encroachment permits, engineering and architectural design, facilities assessment, construction management, and project management. He will manage more than 25 employees. Additionally, he is responsible for developing regulatory procedures, overseeing port plan checking and inspection and providing building code interpretations.

Prior to joining the port, he was employed as a supervisory engineer at Moffatt & Nichol for more than 22 years. His degrees, both from the University of California, Berkley, include a BS in naval architecture and offshore engineering and an MS in structural engineering, mechanics, materials. He is an active member of the American Society of Civil Engineers standards committee for the seismic design of piers and wharves, ASCE 61, a standard first published in 2014.
