First Ship Call at New Montreal Cruise Terminal
The Port of Montreal’s new Alexandra Pier cruise terminal hosted its first ship, Holland America’s Maasdam, on June 10. Among the welcoming delegation were Isabelle Melançon, a member of the Québec provincial assembly, together with Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre and Port Authority President and CEO Sylvie Vachon.
"We are very proud to have successfully completed this important project that represents a milestone in the Port of Montreal's modern history," said Ms. Vachon. "Now fully up and running, this new terminal bolsters the city's international positioning by offering an efficient, friendly and prestigious welcome to cruise passengers from all over the world, and all just in time to celebrate its 375th anniversary!"
Alexandra Pier was built more than a century ago and required upgrades to meet the needs of cruise ships and passengers. Revitalization began in November 2015 and will be completed this September. Financing for the C$78 million project includes contributions of C$20 million from the government of Quebec province, C$15 million from the City of Montreal, and C$43 million from the port authority.
Work will continue over the summer to complete the Port Interpretation Centre, the green roof, the parking area and a large square designed to facilitate public access to the river. A grand opening is planned for September 10. A tower will be inaugurated at the far end of the terminal in 2019.
The port authority is developing an exhibition that depicts the port’s history and its role in in the socio-economic development of Montreal,Quebec and Canada. This exhibition, entitled "History of Ships," will be available to the public free of charge as of the first of July on the second floor of the cruise terminal.
During the 2016 cruise season, Montreal hosted 55 vessel calls, 69,170 passengers and 16,638 crew members at its Iberville Terminal. Sixty-eight calls are scheduled for the 2017 season, which opened May 6 and continues through October 27.’
