Greater Lafourche: Mike Callais Appointed to Port Commission

The Greater Lafourche Port Commission voted unanimously at a special meeting on June 12 to appoint Charles Michael "Mike" Callais as interim commissioner. filling a vacancy created by the death of Wilbert J. Collins, Sr.
Mr. Collins’ 19 years on the port commission included six years as its secretary.  He was appointed to the commission in 1998 and was subsequently elected to three terms and served until his passing on May 27.

Board President Perry Gisclair eulogized Mr. Wilbert as "a force of nature, a legend in the seafood industry, and a great ambassador for our port and our community."

Mr. Callais is an owner and CEO of Abdon Callais Offshore, with experience in the marine industry, commercial real estate, and finance. He is also active in the community, serving on the hospital board and holding leadership positions in volunteer organizations.

"Mike's humble leadership and mind for business will be an asset to our board," said Executive Director Chett Chiasson. "He is a valued resource in our community, and we appreciate him volunteering his services to the Port Commission."

Mr. Callais will serve as commissioner until a special election is held and the winner is certified. The winner will fill the seat for the remainder of the unexpired term through 2018.

The nine-member port commission governs Port Fourchon and South Lafourche Airport. Members are elected to terms of six years.
