The Evergreen Line container ship Ever Sigma last week discharged the 9 millionth TEU to pass through the Port of Los Angeles in the span of 12 months, the most ever for a port in the Western Hemisphere.
The 12-month period corresponds with the Port’s July 1, 2016 through June 30, 2017 Fiscal Year. Furthermore, Los Angeles is on track to beat the calendar year record of 8.8 million TEUs set in 2016. In 2006, Los Angeles became the first port in the Americas to surpass 8 million TEUs.
"As a Port of Los Angeles tenant and partner for more than 50 years, Evergreen is proud to be the shipping line that delivered the 9 millionth TEU during this 12-month period," said Evergreen, Roy Amalfitano, vice chairman of Evergreen Shipping Agency (America) Corporation. "Congratulations to everyone involved, including captain and crew of the Ever Sigma, the ILWU labor workforce, and the Everport terminal management team in Los Angeles. Los Angeles remains an important and strategic gateway for Evergreen, and we look forward to growing our business via the Port of Los Angeles."

Seattle/Tacoma: NWSA handles record May international container volume
The Northwest Seaport Alliance reports international container volume set a May record, with throughput at its Seattle and Tacoma terminals up 18 percent from a year ago to 255,817 TEUs.
Full imports grew 10 percent to 115,960 TEUs as retailers continue to rebuild inventory levels and a favorable market outlook fuels import demand. Despite the strong U.S. dollar, full exports also increased, by 8 percent to 78,086 TEUs.
Year to date, the numbers show increases from January-May 2016 of 11 percent for imports, 5 percent for exports, and 13 percent for international trade overall, including empty containers as well as loads.
The Alliance’s domestic container business declined 7.6 percent for the month and 8.1 percent year-to-date. The Alaska trade is expected to end the year down 5 to 6 percent due to "soft market conditions." Hawaii volumes declined 7 percent due to diversion to Southern California.
Other cargo:
- Log volumes exports up 93.9 percent year-to-date to 129,927 metric tons due to demand from China
- Breakbulk cargo down 7 percent to 69,901 tons year to date due to soft market conditions.
- Autos, at 59,891 units, year to date, slipped 20 percent, reflecting weakening U.S. demand and shifting manufacturing locations.
