Port of San Diego Wins American Public Works Association National Accreditation
The Port of San Diego has received national accreditation from the American Public Works Association (APWA). Accreditation program recognizes public works agencies that exceed the requirements of the management practices established nationally in the public works industry, as contained in the APWA Public Works Management Practices Manual.
To receive accreditation, the port’s Engineering-Construction Department was required to document compliance with more than 200 standard practices that included competence in engineering design and construction as well as in port-wide functions such as emergency management, human resources, finance, risk management and safety, communications and information technology.
The port applied for the APWA Accreditation in the fall of 2016. An APWA site visit team arrived in San Diego in early June to evaluate the Port and tour its facilities. Accreditation is valid for four years.
Ron Calkins, President of the APWA, will officially present the Port of San Diego with its Accreditation at the September 12 meeting of the Board of Port Commissioners meeting.
"The Port of San Diego is honored to be the first port in the country to receive American Public Works Association’s National Accreditation," said Port CEO Randa Coniglio. "I am extremely proud of our Engineering-Construction Department’s professionalism and the hard work of many other departments that resulted in us earning this designation."
