Galveston Awarded $1 Million Federal Port Security Grant

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has awarded the Port of Galveston $1 million through the 2017 Port Security Grant Program.

The grant will fund two projects. The first expands the port’s fiber infrastructure and video surveillance systems, supports cyber security efforts, and provides funds to assist with system maintenance. The second project will replace the canopy at the security gate entrance to Galveston’s West End terminals.

The two projects together are budgeted at $1,121,435, with 25 percent of the cost, or $280,359, to be covered by the port.

"We’re honored by the confidence FEMA has shown in the Port of Galveston with this award," said interim Port Director Peter Simons. "It will help us continue our commitment to enhancing the security of the port and ensuring the safe movement of passengers and cargo through the Port of Galveston complex."
