Long Beach: Port Awards $440,000 to Community Groups
The Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners last week awarded $440,650 in sponsorships to 100 local organizations promoting causes such as the arts, environment, social justice and historic preservation.
The port’s community sponsorship program aims to educate and engage the public about the vital role the port plays in international trade while highlighting the port’s dedication to being a responsible neighbor. Requests for funding are submitted twice a year, in September and March.
The board approved a $1 million sponsorship budget for the 2018 fiscal year that began October 1.
Events sponsored for this call include the Cambodia Town Culture Festival, the American Cancer Society’s Long Beach Cancer League Gala, Fourth Fridays on Fourth Street and the International City Theatre’s Free Saturday Family Theatre Series.
Port staff members attend select sponsored events to provide information about the Port. As part of a sponsorship agreement, recipients also give the port promotional opportunities at events to spread awareness about its mission.
"Programs like this show our commitment to serving the public and promoting groups and events that make Long Beach a better place to live and work," said Harbor Commission President Lou Anne Bynum. "Our community sponsorships provide our staff with opportunities to interact with residents who may not know their Port brings them many of the goods they use every day and the port supports more than a million jobs around the country."
