Eimskip Advances to Weekly Callings and Feeder Sea Service at Port of Halifax

Icelandic ocean carrier Eimskip has established short sea feeder shipping service between the ports of Halifax and Portland (ME)

The new service began November 30 with the docking of M/V Eimskip Selfoss at Halterm International Container Terminal in Halifax.

Eimskip is deploying a third vessel to its Green Line rotation to assure weekly departures from Europe and weekly calls at Portland and Canadian ports.  It includes FCL and LCL dry and reefer containers and flat racks as well as project cargo, breakbulk and oversized cargo, and IMO cargo.  The carrier also takes note of its "excellent network connections with Southern Europe, Russia and the Baltics."

"This new weekly offering will better serve our existing customer base and will create an avenue for future growth," said Jeff Simms, managing director, Eimskip Canada. "We are seeing increased volumes through operations at Portland, Maine, as well as Halifax and Newfoundland. The combined increase is making the change to weekly calls a reality."

"We are delighted to be working with Eimskip, a long-term customer, on the development of its intra-regional and trans-Atlantic services," said Kim Holtermand, CEO and managing director at Halterm International Container Terminal.  He noted that the ultra-container vessels serving Halifax and other East Coast North America ports "need a strong feeder and intermodal network and Halterm is proud to partner Eimskip in making one such opportunity available to and from the New England states."

Halterm is a tenant of the Halifax Port Authority.

"We value all of the ocean carriers calling on Halifax. Eimskip has carved out a strong business in the refrigerated cargo sector, specifically focusing on the frozen seafood market between North Europe, Atlantic Canada, and the New England states," said Karen Oldfield, the port authority’s president and CEO. "The addition of a third vessel to Eimskip’s Green Line will certainly be welcome news for Eimskip’s existing customers and will create new global supply chain opportunities."

M/V Eimskip Selfoss operates in the Icelandic ocean carrier’s new short sea feeder service between Halifax and Portland (ME). Built in 2008, the 8166-dwt vessel is 425 feet/129.6 meters long, 68 feet/20.8 meters wide, has container capacity of 698 TEUs and maximum speed of 16.7 knots.
