Business Development: Connecticut, DHI

 

Commuters on the I-95 Gold Memorial Bridge over the Thames River may have noticed more and more ships arriving at the Connecticut Port Authority's Port of New London. Thanks to Logistec’s work to build relationships with customers and partners, business is booming at the State Pier. New London has seen an increase in bulk road salt—which keeps drivers safe through the winter—as well as general breakbulk cargo such as structural steel, aluminum, lumber, paper, marine pilings, and large project components for infrastructure projects in Connecticut and across the Northeast.

 

Logistec provides specialized cargo handling and port logistics services to marine and industrial customers. It’s one of the most experienced terminal operators along the East Coast, and has been in New London for over 20 years.

 

Cargo received in New London is distributed throughout New England, the Northeast, and the Mid-Atlantic to reach markets in both the United States and Canada. New London’s easy access to I-95, I-395, and the New England Central Railroad provides multiple avenues to transport goods.

 

"Intermodal connectivity is one of our many strengths here at State Pier. Speed and efficiency are critical for the rail and truck operators with whom we work so closely onsite," says Frank Vannelli, Senior Vice President of Commercial and Business Development at Logistec. "Trucks have a one-hour turnaround time at the terminal, meaning they can have multiple deliveries to clients on the same day. We also complete a daily rail switch with our intermodal partner the New England Central Railroad. This allows for loading and unloading of rail cars offering cost competitive transportation within the U.S. and Canada."

 

 

DHI Water & Environment, Inc, a Danish not-for-profit research and consultancy firm regionally headquartered in Denver, CO, has expanded its footprint to now include an Ecology and Environment Department (EED). The EED department will allow DHI to offer a more comprehensive array of ecological and environmental services to their client base in North and South America. 

 

According to DHI’s Regional Director for the Americas, Tom Foster, positive market indicators and the success other DHI EEDs have had around the world in developing their environmental offerings led to the decision to open this department in North America. "We have always provided water related environmental services to our clients in the U.S. and Canada, but felt the increasing demand for integrated environmental input warranted a dedicated group that could better bring new and existing EED services to the forefront," stated Foster.  

 

Heading the new EED Department is Director of Environmental Projects for the Americas, Josh van Berkel. "The nature of DHI’s environmental services will focus on our core competencies in water environments, namely providing risk assessments in the form of environmental impact assessments (EIAs) and mitigation strategies from the early planning stage through operations. These services will be based on the innovative methods already applied in other DHI markets including Europe, South East Asia, and Australasia," explained van Berkel.  

 

Through dedicated research, MIKE Powered by DHI numerical models, and operational systems, DHI has developed tools that push the boundaries of environmental assessment in the fields of:

• remote sensing solutions for baseline data collection and environmental analysis
• web-based GIS databases for strategic analyses and stakeholder consultation
• environmental assessment of water quality and ecological impacts associated with dredging and reclamation
• modeling of ecological receptors and habitat
• natural capital accounting
• analysis of environmental risk associated with vessel traffic
• advanced oil spill modeling and response analysis
• specialist real-time and feedback environmental monitoring and management techniques and systems

According to van Berkel, "These tools are based on DHI’s comprehensive numerical modeling capabilities coupled with the environmental expertise of our ecologists, chemists, biologists, and environmental scientists. We will apply these tools to support fundamental environmental decision-making processes in areas such as Integrated Coastal Zone Management Planning, Environmental Impact, and Environmental Risk Assessment". 

 

DHI’s habitat, underwater sound, and agent-based modeling software and services allow the firm to analyze coral, seagrass, marine mammals, seabirds, fish and other coastal and marine species and habitat. The MARAMBS Model, for example, predicts fluctuations in marine and coastal habitat based on the physicochemical variables associated with species habitat preferences. The Agent-Based Model predicts an agent’s (e.g. whales, seabirds, and fish) behavioral response to a stressor such as underwater sound. 

 

DHI’s goal with the opening of this new EED department is to greater contribute to the rise in professional knowledge-based environmental assessment and management initiatives in coastal and water environments here in North and South America.
