Hamilton Port Authority Recognized as a Bicycle Friendly Business

Hamilton Port Authority was recently recognized by the Share the Road Coalition as a Bicycle Friendly Business. The port received an honorable mention for its work to make cycling a viable option for staff, customers and visitors.

HPA supports SoBi, Hamilton’s bike share program, by providing storage space for bicycles and equipment. It also sponsors a SoBi bike share station at a street corner, where visitors to the neighborhood can consult a signpost with directions to the Arts & Science brewery, Bayfront Park, HMCS Haida and other area destinations.

HPA encourages active transportation among staff by providing access to SoBi passes, as well as on-site bike parking at its office.

"We support efficient transportation in all its forms," said HPA President & CEO Bruce Wood. "Supporting our staff’s ability to choose active transportation options just makes sense – it’s part of a healthy workplace."

Port of Hueneme Joins Green Marine
 
The Port of Hueneme has signed on as a participant in Green Marine, a voluntary environmental program for the maritime industry in North America. The announcement was made November 23 by Jess Herrera, president of the Oxnard Harbor District’s Board of Harbor Commissioners.

Green Marine’s environmental program makes it possible for ports, terminal operators and shipping lines to voluntarily reduce their environmental footprint through a comprehensive program that addresses key environmental issues and criteria using 11 performance indicators including air emissions, community impacts, environmental leadership and much more.

Membership in Green Marine requires that members demonstrate year-over-year meaningful improvements in measurable ways to maintain their Green Marine certification. Green Marine is transparent with all results independently verified and made public.

"We’re absolutely delighted to welcome Hueneme as the first port from California to join the Green Marine program," said Green Marine Executive Director David Bolduc. "We have no doubt that the administration of this deepwater port will enhance our membership by sharing its environmental initiatives and best practices."

The port recently christened the first stage of its wharf 1 shore side power program. The port predicts the program will result in emissions reductions of 92 percent in particulate material (PM), 98 percent in mono-nitrogen oxides (NOx) and 55 percent in carbon dioxide (CO2) over the next 30 years. A second stage allowing additional ships to simultaneously plug-in is expected to be completed early next year. "The port is also pursuing aggressive energy audits leading towards yet more positive environmental impacts," said Port CEO and Executive Director Kristin Decas.

More than 85 port authorities, terminal operators, ship owners and shipyards in Canada and the United States are enrolled in the program. In October 2013, Green Marine and AAPA signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the purpose of advancing the environmental sustainability of port and terminal operators.
