In Memoriam – Charles A. Towsley

Former PortMiami Seaport Director Charles A. "Chuck" Towsley passed away February 28, 2016.  He was 67 and lived in Pembroke Pines (FL).

Mr. Towsley was appointed Miami-Dade Seaport Director in 1998 and served until his retirement in 2006.  

After leaving PortMiami, Mr. Towsley founded Maritime Directions, a maritime consulting firm.

Earlier, he worked for the Tampa Port Authority from 1991 to 1998, initially as deputy port director, then as senior deputy director, and finally as managing director. From 1982 to 1991, he was managing director of development for the Hamilton Port Authority in Hamilton (ON).

Prior to entering public port administration full-time, he was a partner and vice president of planning for Planistics Group, a private development planning and engineering consulting firm specializing in commercial, industrial and marine port projects.

Mr. Towsley graduated from Northeastern Illinois University with a bachelor’s degree in environmental biology and the University of Michigan with a master’s in environmental science. He was also an AAPA-certified Professional Port Manager (PPM®).

He served on AAPA’s board of directors and its Harbors & Navigation and Port Security committees.

Survivors include his wife, Colleen; son, Matthew; daughter, Sarah (Jim); and three grandchildren.
