Three new electric ship-to-shore gantry cranes arrived at the Port of San Juan on March 29. They will be used to load and unload Crowley Maritime’s new Commencement class combination container-ro/ro ships. El Coquí, the first of these LNG powered vessels, is expected to be in service later this year, with the second to follow in early 2018.
According to the Puerto Rico Ports Authority, the gantry cranes constitute the first investment of its kind in this market by an ocean shipping company since 1961.
