The Port of Corpus Christi Authority was recently called upon to leverage logistics in providing Beeville (TX) with water after the city lost power to its water treatment systems and exhausted its water supply.
Beeville, with a population of about 13,000, is the seat of Bee County, about 60 miles from the port. It is home to three prisons operated by the Texas Department of Correctional Justice and Coastal Bend College.
With many pallets of bottled water remaining in Port of Corpus Christi warehousing since a recent water issue in the City of Corpus Christi, the port is assisting in the distribution of water to the citizens of Beeville.
Numerous pallets of bottled water were acquired by the City of Corpus Christi through an anonymous donation in December 2016 following an alert requiring the discontinuation of tap water use for any purpose for several days. In support of ongoing emergency management efforts, the port authority stepped in by providing operational support, warehouse space, and man-power.
The Corpus Christi water crisis was soon resolved, and pallets have remained stored at the port as a backup resource or another water event such as the one that occurred in Bee County.
"Our port is deeply rooted with the citizens of our region," said Charles W. Zahn, Jr. Port of Corpus Christi Commission Chair. "We are ready and willing to provide support during this and other times of need."
San Diego: Board of Port Commissioners Earmarks FY 2018 Budget Funding for 72 Waterfront Events
San Diego’s Board of Port Commissioners earmarked funding in its budget to support 72 events during Fiscal Year 2018 as part of the port’s Tidelands Activation Program.
The port’s support of these events comprises $489,000 in earmarked sponsorship funding with an additional $1,048,469 earmarked in the form of waived fees. The Tidelands Activation Program is an annual grant program through which the port actively supports events, large and small, that engage the community and inspire visitors to enjoy San Diego Bay.
The program includes proposed sponsorship of the Port of San Diego Holiday Bowl Parade, scheduled for December 27, 2017. Other events were selected for proposed sponsorship through a rigorous public evaluation process led by the Tidelands Activation Program Advisory Committee, chaired by Commissioner Ann Moore.
Actual funding for all events, however, is subject to environmental review under the California Environmental Quality Act and the completion of individual agreements with each event organizer.
"The Port of San Diego supports strong communities and family fun by dedicating significant resources to sponsor public, waterfront events in our public parks, piers and open spaces through the Port’s Tidelands Activation Program," said Chairman Robert "Dukie" Valderrama. "Port-sponsored events represent many diverse interests and take place in all five of our Port cities, providing something for everyone. I encourage all of our residents to spend a day on San Diego Bay at one of these great events."
