Cruise guests, locals and tourists enjoying New Orleans riverfront now have an added layer of security. On May 10, the port’s Harbor Police Department (HPD) initiated bicycle patrols aimed at increasing security from Mardi Gras World to the French Market.
"We have worked on this plan for some time at the direction of the port’s President and CEO Brandy Christian – aimed at increasing our officers’ visibility and providing a safe and secure riverfront for our guests," said Harbor Police Chief Robert S. Hecker. "We believe this endeavor will do just that."
Port officials coordinated the effort with all riverfront stakeholders, including the Audubon Nature Institute, French Market Corporation, New Orleans Steamboat Company and the New Orleans Police Department.
Several Harbor Police Officers were recently certified as bicycle patrol officers for the effort.
"We are pleased to offer this service to our neighbors along the downtown Riverfront area and are committed to providing a safe and secure environment throughout all of our jurisdiction," said Christian.
HPD has 44 budgeted positions - three administrators and the rest sworn police officers. Harbor police officers work closely with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Customs and Border Protection, U.S. Coast Guard and local law enforcement agencies to provide security throughout the port. HPD is one of a handful of few port police departments with its own police academy.
The bicycle patrol initiative begins as the port celebrates Maritime Month in May with the theme "Your Working River" and includes several events to demonstrate the industry’s role in job creation and its connection to the community.
