Emergency Relief: Canaveral
Port Canaveral Supports Relief Efforts in Puerto Rico
Port Canaveral has been a center of activity for multiple coordinated relief efforts to aid the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico by providing resources to the island as the recovery process continues in the wake of Hurricane Maria.
In recent weeks, Beyel Brothers Crane and Rigging partnered with a Canaveral port tenant, Marine Terminal Operator Ambassador Services Inc., in transporting communications equipment, infrastructure, emergency supplies and equipment to the island, including pallets of bottled water, bundles of fiber optic cables, vehicles and light poles.
Port Canaveral was selected because of its central location to expedite the delivery of materials arriving from Florida and Georgia.
On October 23, approximately 2,500 light poles held in laydown yards at Ambassador Services Inc. were bundled and loaded onto the Kaylee Frances barge, which was powered by the Megan Beyel ocean-going tug for the 8-day transit to the island.
On November 1, the JMC180 barge powered by the Daniel Beyel ocean-going tug departed Canaveral for Puerto Rico with a second shipment of relief supplies, including utility vehicles, reels of fiber optic cable and pallets of bottled water.
"Port Canaveral is proud to play a role in the recovery efforts for the people of Puerto Rico," said Port CEO John Murray. "We are fully committed to this Herculean effort to deliver the much-needed supplies as quickly as possible."
