Suape Port Authority Refuses Docking of Aircraft Carrier – Cites Health and Safety Concerns

The Port of Suape in Pernambuco, Brazil, an AAPA member, has refused entry and docking of the aircraft carrier Sao Paulo due to environmental, sanitary, and operational risks. The State of Pernambuco government, where the port is located, is in support of this decision. The port authority and the state government petitioned and received preventive legal support from the Brazilian Federal Justice Department to avoid forced action by the Navy of Brazil to receive the aircraft carrier at the Port of Suape. The national Brazilian seaports association, ABEPH, supports the Port of Suape in its decision.

The aircraft carrier was to be dismantled in Turkey by the company Sok Deniszcilikve Tic, which acquired the vessel, but Turkey refused to receive the ship due to environmental concerns. Read more in the following news sources: Maritime ExecutiveGO Shipbreaking Platform, ABC en el Este, and Valor.
