January is National Human Trafficking Awareness Month, and this year, an initiative is underway to raise awareness of this human rights abuse in U.S. seaports. AAPA has joined forces with Businesses Ending Slavery and Trafficking (BEST) to roll out the Not Alone awareness campaign to over 70 seaports across the nation. This campaign aims to shine a light on the issue of human trafficking and to empower victims, port employees, and seaports visitors to take action.

PortMiami has issued an invitation to bid for the South Bulkhead Repairs Bays 165-177 (Project #2010-051.06) that involves berth renovation improvements. The main purpose of the project’s design and construction is to reinforce the existing seawall section(s) to withstand additional cargo container loads. This will allow larger and more efficient container cargo cranes to be utilized for more efficient container loading and unloading purposes. A mandatory pre-bid conference and site visit will be held at 10:00 a.m., ET on January 25, at PortMiami. Bids will be received at PortMiami until 2:00 p.m., ET on February 14. Port of Corpus Christi customers moved record tonnage through the waterway for the first time in its history. The 203 million tons moved in 2023 was an 8.1% increase from the prior year, primarily attributed to a jump in crude oil exports to 126.1 million tons in 2023, a 12.5% increase compared to 2022. In November 2023, the Port of New York and New Jersey moved 644,439 TEUs (355,788 containers). This number represents a 10.9% decrease over last year’s November figure of 723,069 TEUs (400,202 containers) and brings the port’s year-through November total to 7,176,126 TEUs (3,976,774 containers). The Port of Los Angeles closed out 2023 on a strong note, processing 747,335 TEUs, 2.5% more than last year. It was the fifth consecutive month of year-over-year gains. The port finished 2023 handling 8,634,497 TEUs, about 13% less than the prior year.

PortMiami welcomes the largest cruise ship in the world, Icon of the Seas, which will be homeported year-round from PortMiami. Icon of the Seas is Royal Caribbean’s first Icon Class ship and first ship with fuel cell technology and powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG).

Professional porters who are members of the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) Local 1526 are participating in a hospitality training program designed to augment Port Everglades’ world-class service. Porters’ primary role is to greet cruise guests, confirm stateroom numbers and stow guests’ luggage.

The Port of New Orleans will receive $73.77 million from the federal government to assist in building the Louisiana International Terminal (LIT) project, which will provide an efficient gateway for the movement of cargo on the Mississippi River and the inland waterways of the United States. The funding through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s MEGA Grant Program will support the first phase of the overall $1.8 billion project’s construction.

The Port of Long Beach is laying the tracks for a sustainable future by modernizing rail facilities and enhancing air quality, CEO Mario Cordero said during his seventh State of the Port Address last week. With an eye toward making Long Beach the world’s first zero-emissions seaport, Cordero announced construction will start this year on the Pier B On-Dock Rail Support Facility, which aims to move cargo more quickly, make the port more competitive and improve the environment for nearby communities.
