Boosted by a 28-season high for iron ore, total maritime tonnage for the Port of Duluth-Superior finished the 2023 navigation season up 4.5% compared to 2022 and up 0.1% against the five-season average. The total float eclipsed 31.7 million short tons, including more than 21.5 million tons of iron ore, the most in a single season since 1995. The 2023 shipping season closed at the Port of Green Bay with 1,782,887 tons of materials handled. That amount is about 1% above last season’s tonnage of 1,765,834. While tonnage levels were similar over the past two seasons, the number of ships that visited the Port of Green Bay increased. Trade moving through the Port of Long Beach rose in January as retailers stocked up ahead of Lunar New Year, when east Asian factories typically close for up to two weeks. Dockworkers and terminal operators moved 674,015 TEUs last month, up 17.5% from January 2023. The Port of Los Angeles handled 855,652 TEUs in January, the second-best start to the year on record. Eclipsed only by the pandemic-induced cargo surge in 2022, it was the sixth consecutive month of year-over-year increases and surpassed January 2023 by 18%.
