The Port of Oakland reported a 5.4% increase in overall loaded container volume for August 2024 compared to the same month last year. Imports saw significant growth, rising 14.9% to 83,272 TEUs, while exports dipped 5.5% due to seasonal factors. Matthew Creswell has served as the Harbormaster for the Port of Juneau since 2020 and the Deputy Harbormaster since 2017. In his role, he supervises 50 employees and manages Juneau’s $250 million port and harbor infrastructure. He has a background in maritime operations and previously served in the U.S. Coast Guard.
Matthew’s PPM capstone draws comparisons between the shore power systems of PortMiami and the Port of Juneau, emphasizing the technical and financial complexities involved. While PortMiami operates year-round with ample infrastructure, Juneau’s short six-month cruise season and space limitations drive up costs. Furthermore, Juneau faces unique challenges with its reliance on hydropower, which can only supply electricity to ships about 25% of the time, highlighting the need for strategic planning and resource management.
Through his residency at PortMiami, Matthew gained valuable insights into shore power implementation, including the importance of detailed berthing studies, collaboration with contractors, and exploring funding opportunities.
