The Port of Galveston, operating independently without tax revenues or city funding since 1940, has successfully maintained financial self-sufficiency through operational revenues, bonds, and grants. Despite challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic, the Port avoided layoffs and financial deficits, thanks to prudent fiscal management. With the recent resurgence of the cruise industry, the Port has achieved record revenues, allowing for over $300 million in improvements, including a new cruise terminal and parking garage. As Port revenues grow, so do the city's benefits, with projected increases in payments and tax revenues from the cruise business.

The Port of Everett has earned international recognition with two Excellence in Economic Development Awards from the International Economic Development Council (IEDC).
