The Port of Québec is transforming into a vibrant winter destination with new attractions and activities as part of its 2035 Vision. Starting December 20, visitors can enjoy Discoglace, an outdoor skating rink with themed music and colorful lighting, followed by the opening of Village Nordik on February 7, offering ice fishing and family-friendly activities. The Port is also launching interactive kiosks to educate visitors about maritime operations and hosting its first winter cruises in January, showcasing Québec's winter beauty to an international audience. These initiatives highlight the Port’s commitment to engaging the community and enhancing winter tourism.

The Port of Caddo-Bossier has officially opened its new $12 million heavy-load, multi-modal warehouse. This 40,000-square-foot facility, funded in part by the Louisiana Department of Transportation and the Red River Waterway Commission, complements a 100,000-square-foot warehouse that opened in 2022. Odyssey Logistics, LLC has leased the new space to support Port tenants and ensure operational continuity during delivery challenges. Port leaders highlighted the warehouse as an example of responsive development, fulfilling tenant needs while driving economic growth for the region.

Tanco Terminals is investing $8.2 million to expand its liquid tank farm at Ports of Indiana-Burns Harbor. The project includes new storage tanks with a combined capacity of 114,000 barrels, enhanced multimodal transload equipment, a sixth rail loading track, and upgraded safety measures. This expansion supports growing customer demand in industries like agriculture, petroleum, and steel manufacturing while positioning Tanco for future opportunities with ISO tank container services. Tanco has been a tenant at Burns Harbor since 1977 and is one of the port’s longest-standing partners.

The Port of San Diego and the San Diego County Local Agency Formation Commission (LAFCO) have formalized a Memorandum of Understanding to establish a cooperative framework for their relationship. The agreement outlines provisions for jurisdictional oversight, territorial changes, and the creation of a Sphere of Influence, fostering transparency and collaboration between the agencies. Key highlights include a process for annexations, Municipal Services Reviews starting in 2026, and the inclusion of diverse stakeholder input. This partnership underscores a shared commitment to benefiting the San Diego region and its communities.

We are excited to announce that the U.S. Department of Transportation will headline the exciting lineup at the 2025 POWERS Summit & Expo in Tampa on January 20-22. Gregg G. Fleming, Director of the Volpe Center at the U.S. Department of Transportation, is responsible for applying innovations to address challenges across all modes of transportation. He provides strategic direction to the U.S. DOT Volpe Center goals, objectives, programs, and resources to support U.S. DOT’s strategic goals and help the transportation community navigate its most challenging problems.
As the former director of the U.S. DOT Volpe Center’s Center for Policy, Planning, and Environment, Fleming has guided the work of numerous multifaceted teams on projects supporting government, industry, and academia, including OST, the United Nations' International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), FAA, FHWA, National Park Service, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Environmental Protection Agency, and National Academy of Sciences.
Fleming currently co-chairs the ICAO Modeling and Databases Group and represents FAA at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. He is chairman emeritus of the Transportation Research Board's Committee for Transportation Related Noise and Vibration and is active in the Society of Automotive Engineers, as well as numerous other technical organizations.

Port Everglades, the Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association (FCCA), and Holland America Line hosted a holiday celebration onboard the Nieuw Statendam for 40 children from the nonprofit Kids in Distress. The event featured a three-course lunch, arts-and-crafts, a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus, and gifts, including stuffed animals and a $5,000 donation from Holland America Line. This initiative is part of the FCCA’s Holiday Gift Project, which has supported underprivileged children for over two decades and benefits 23 destinations this year.

The Belledune Port Authority and QSL have signed a new 25-year lease agreement to strengthen their partnership and support the Port’s transformation into a green energy hub. This collaboration builds on nearly three decades of joint efforts, including a recent $35 million terminal expansion supported by the National Trade Corridor Fund and the Government of New Brunswick. The agreement aims to enhance cargo handling efficiency, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and grow renewable energy supply chains, solidifying Belledune as Eastern Canada’s largest supplier of renewable wood pellets to Europe. Both organizations are committed to sustainable growth and community engagement.

The Port of Seattle Commission has initiated a study to assess the potential benefits of enhanced healthcare for more than 20,000 nongovernment workers at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA). The two-phase study, concluding in mid-2025, will evaluate how healthcare improvements could impact worker retention, recruitment, and operational safety while supporting the airport’s goal of achieving a five-star Skytrax rating. Findings from the study may lead to a policy directive on mandatory healthcare benefits. This initiative builds on recent efforts to enhance workplace quality and competitiveness at SEA.

The Port of Long Beach has received $283 million in federal funding through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Mega Grant Program to advance the Pier B On-Dock Rail Support Facility, part of the $1.567 billion "America’s Green Gateway" project. This facility will reduce truck traffic by moving cargo directly via trains, increasing efficiency, and lessening environmental impacts. Scheduled to begin construction next year, the expanded rail yard will more than triple on-dock rail capacity, handling up to 4.7 million TEUs annually by project completion in 2032. To date, the project has secured over $640 million in grant funding from federal and state sources.

The AAPA Legislative Summit is the premier port industry government affairs and advocacy forum held annually in Washington, D.C. and will take place March 18-20, 2025.
The summit brings together senior port executives from around the nation with federal government leadership to discuss issues important to one of the most critical national industries. AAPA plans and manages private meetings with Congressional leadership for our port executives as part of this event.
