The Georgia Ports Authority reports container throughput at its Garden City complex in the Port of Savannah totaled some 2.55 million TEUs during the first eight months of CY 2015, an increase from last year of 16.7 percent. To meet future growth, it will invest up to $12.6 million  in Phase 3 of Savannah’s yard crane electrification.
 
The Philadelphia Regional Port Authority (PRPA) has released a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) for prospective partners in the development of the Southport complex. The ultimate objective is to establish one or more new maritime businesses along the Delaware River.
 
 
   
Carnival Cruise Line and the City of Mobile announced September 23 that the Carnival Fantasy will operate a year-long schedule of four- and five-day cruises to Mexico from the city-owned Alabama Cruise Terminal in the Port of Mobile beginning in fall 2016. Celebrity Solstice called the Port of Nanaimo on September 21 and will return two more times in 2016. With a length of 1,500 feet and accommodations for nearly 3,000 passengers, it is the largest cruise ship so far to call this Vancouver Island port community.
 
PortMiami marked the completed of its -50/-52 ft. Deep Dredge project and On-Dock Intermodal Rail with a ceremony on September 18. "A new big ship era is here and PortMiami is ready," said PortMiami Director and CEO Juan M. Kuryla, PPM®. "I am proud to say that PortMiami is now able to berth post-Panamax ships; and we are able to expedite the movement of goods throughout Florida, the continental U.S., and the world, fast and efficiently."
 
Washington State Governor Jay Inslee joined other dignitaries on September 21 in helping the Port of Port Angeles break ground on a new Composite Recycling Technology Center (CRTC) at the port’s Composite Manufacturing Campus. The center will convert carbon fiber composite scrap material, left over from transportation and other advanced manufacturing industries, into new and useful products.
 
The U.S. Department of Agriculture has approved Port Tampa Bay’s participation in a cold treatment program to import refrigerated grapes, blueberries, apples, pears and citrus from South America effective October 1.

The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey renewed its sister port agreement with the Port of Tokyo during a ceremony in New York on September 2. The two agencies will explore opportunities for establishing a staff exchange program to facilitate research regarding sustainable ports, enhanced international logistics, and best practices for the cruise industry and leisure/recreational marine activities in both ports. The Richmond City Council on September 14 unanimously  a proposal that allows The Port of Virginia to continue to lease and operate the Port of Richmond barge terminal for the next 40 years.  Barged container traffic has skyrocketed at the James River facility since its lease to the state port authority in 2011.
 
 
   
John E. Walsh will be leaving his post as Port Canaveral’s chief executive officer on January 21, 2016. Jason Miura is the newly appointed director of business and economic development at Port Freeport.
 
Highly trained master riggers moved 14 aluminum crew boats through the heavy lift and specialty cargo berth at the Jacksonville Port Authority’s Blount Island Marine Terminal. The boats are being sent to Maracaibo, Venezuela, where they will be used to transport oil refinery employees to and from offshore oil rigs.
 
The Port of Oakland reports operating revenues in FY 2015 reached a record high of $336.4 million, an increase of 2.4 percent from FY 2014 that reflected year/on/year gains for each of its three major business lines – aviation, commercial real estate and maritime.

This spring and summer, important projects that support shipping activities and enhance bay habitat were completed on the two dredge material management areas in Hillsborough Bay, thanks to the close collaboration of multiple agencies, including Port Tampa Bay. Port Metro Vancouver has committed approximately C$2 million over five years to in the Fraser River Improvement Initiative, a program to clean up municipal waterways and shipping channels. The initiative targets neglected vessels and structures that pose risk to wildlife or natural habitats, or impede navigational safety.
 
 
   
Florida-based SC Line has begun operating a service that calls Cuba every 14 days, sailing from Port Everglades to Mariel and Santiago de Cuba.
