Wes Hoskins was welcomed as the new member of the Port Corpus Christi Commission representing San Patricio County during the commission’s first regular meeting of the New Year. Also taking the oath of office was Richard Ralph Valls, who was re-appointed to the commission by the City of Corpus Christi. Wayne M. Richards was elected chairman of the Port of Palm Beach Board of Commissioners during the board’s meeting on January 20. Also elected were Dr. Jean L. Enright, vice-chair, and George E. Mastics, secretary-treasurer. The Port of San Diego swore in its 2016 board of port commissioners executive officers at a state of the port event earlier this month at the USS Midway Museum. They include: Marshall Merrifield, chairman; Robert "Dukie" Valderrama, vice chairman, and Rafael Castellanos, secretary. For the first time ever, two African-Americans have been elected the top officers of the San Francisco Port Commission – Willie Adams as president and Kimberly Brandon as vice president.
Port of Oakland officials promised to keep cargo moving efficiently after Ports America Outer Harbor terminal announced January 19 it will close in March. The port said vessels will be rerouted to adjacent terminals after the shutdown occurs.

Delaware River private and public port facilities in Delaware, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania received 2,242 ship calls in 2015, reports the Maritime Exchange for the Delaware River and Bay. That was up 5.0 percent from 2014 and 10 percent from 2010, giving the tri-state port complex its best year since 2008. The Ohio River Port of Indiana-Mount Vernon handled a record 6.6 million tons of cargo in 2015. That was up 36 percent from 2014 thanks to double-digit gains by coal, steel, and agri-bulks. Container movements through the Port of Los Angeles totaled 8,160,457 TEUs in 2015, down 2.1 percent from 2014. It was the fifth year the port has surpassed the 8-million TEU threshold. The Puget Sound container trade rebounded in 2015, with the Northwest Seaport Alliance handling more than 3.5 million TEUs at its Seattle and Tacoma terminals, an increase of 4 percent compared to 2014.

The Virgin Islands Port Authority (VIPA) has signed an agreement with the world’s second largest cruise line, solidifying the business relationship between the two parties and securing the cruise industry in the U.S. Virgin Islands for the next decade. The contract with Royal Caribbean Cruises, Limited (RCCL) takes effect October 1, 2016, for a term of 10 years and includes an option to renew for an additional five years.

The Port of Seattle’s new paid parental leave plan for port employees offers up to four weeks paid leave for parents to bond with their children. The new benefit is available to employees for the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a new child.

The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT), Harbors Division, celebrated the Pier 4 Project at Hilo Harbor with a groundbreaking and dedication/blessing ceremony earlier this month. The multi-phase project includes: dredging and construction of the Pier 4 Inter-Island Cargo Terminal, construction of the Inter-Island Cargo Terminal Facility–Container Yard, and Kumau Street Entrance Improvements.

The Port of San Diego is considering a proposal by the San Diego Symphony to construct a permanent outdoor concert venue in the park where it has operated a Summer Pops concert series since 2004.
