The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) announced March 23 that the Panama Canal Expansion will be officially inaugurated on Sunday, June 26, 2016. The expansion adds a third set of locks to the waterway that will allow transit by container ships ranging in capacity up to 14,000 TEUs, or nearly triple the size of the largest ships that can be accommodated by the original locks.

The Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) Board on March 24 voted to approve a project partnering agreement with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (ACOE) and the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) to start the Boston Harbor Dredging Project. Maintenance dredging will restore the inner harbor to 40 feet and is the first phase of the larger dredging project.

Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) reports container throughput increased 8.1 percent this February at its Garden City Terminal in the Port of Savannah – to 307,035 TEUs from 284,307 TEUs in February 2015. The Port of Oakland experienced a dramatic upturn in February, with container volumes jumping up 54.2 percent to 188,139 TEUs, including increases from February 2015 of 89.7 percent for imports, 37 percent for exports, and 41.6 percent for empty containers.

The Port of San Diego has been awarded a grant in the amount of $3,350,000 by the California Wildlife Conservation Board for the Shelter Island Boat Launch Facility Improvement Project. The project will improve the launch ramp’s basin by enlarging its maneuvering area, replacing the worn-out launch ramp, increasing the lengths of the boarding floats, providing a concrete drop-off area for kayaks, and bringing the restroom to current Americans with Disability Act standards.

The Florida Legislature on March 11 approved legislation which includes an increase in the minimum statutory amount for seaport funding from $15 million to $25 million for the Florida Seaport Transportation and Economic Development (FSTED) program. Projects selected by the Florida Ports Council for funding are financed on a 50-50 matching basis using local and FSTED Program funds.

Carnival Cruise Line’s Carnival Triumph sailed from the Port of Galveston for her final time on March 21. A fixture at the port for the past four and half years, the 2754-passenger "Fun Ship" has embarked hundreds of thousands sea-going tourists on voyages to Mexico and the Caribbean.
