AAPA’s 2016 Spring Conference, April 4-6 in Washington, D.C., kicked off with a welcome reception at the Canadian Embassy and a celebration of Western Hemisphere Ports Day, with the theme Ports: United for the Future.
Main event highlights included insights on the 2016 U.S. Presidential race from renowned political expert Charlie Cook, of The Cook Political Report, a keynote address from U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx and the election of Mark McAndrews as AAPA's next chairman.
Additionally, the Port of Valparaiso, Chile was selected by the Board of Directors as the host of the 2018 AAPA Annual Convention.
Big Bend Power Station/TECO is a coal-fired power plant. The plant receives 2-3 coal shipments a week by barge and provides trans-loading and terminalling services as well.

Port Manatee’s container trade surged during the first half of the fiscal year that began October 1, 2015, jumping 36 percent from a year ago to 12,653 TEUs, putting the port on course for a second consecutive record year. Container lifts at the Port of New York & New Jersey set a monthly record in February. Intermodal rail and auto volumes also posted year-on-year increases. The Philadelphia Regional Port Authority (PRPA) reports cargo throughput in 2015 exceeded 6.0 million metric tons for the first time ever, giving the port its sixth consecutive record year.

The Port of Duluth-Superior received its first ocean-going vessel of the 2016 season on Sunday, April 3, when M/V Albanyborg passed through the Duluth Ship Canal and beneath the Aerial Bridge, inbound to load grain for export to Italy. Maersk and MSC will be offering containerized cargo shippers a new service between the Port of Mobile and Asia beginning May 2. Trans Global Shipping will continue to use Delaware’s Port of Wilmington as its mid-Atlantic import Chilean fruit distribution hub for at least the next five years under a newly signed agreement with the Diamond State Port Corporation.

The Port of Long Beach has commissioned a study to evaluate the business case for shuttling cargo by rail between the San Pedro Bay port complex and the major consumer markets and warehousing districts within 100 miles of the harbor. Piggybacking on the success of the Upriver Container Barge-Rail Shuttle program, Northwest Container Service, which counts the Port of Portland among its sponsors, will increase rail service to benefit shippers in Central and Eastern Oregon.

Vancouver’s port now has a new name, dropping Port Metro Vancouver to become the "Port of Vancouver." In addition, the port authority will implement the consistent use of its legal name, the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority, when referencing activities or decisions of the port authority.

The Port of South Louisiana on April 6 dedicated a new fireboat – the 75-foot M/V Nathan Folse, a Catamaran style vessel capable of pumping 5,000 gallons of water per minute.

The Port of Vancouver USA has received its sixth consecutive clean audit from the Washington State Auditor’s Office, this time for the audit period January 1 through December 31, 2015. Fitch Ratings has affirmed an ‘A’ ranking for Port Canaveral’s $13 million of outstanding revenue bonds, series 2006 A&B, and declared all Canaveral bonds as ‘stable.’
