U.S. Home Security Secretary Jeh Johnson has appointed April Danos, director of information technology for the Greater Lafourche Port Commission, to the National Maritime Security Advisory Committee (NMSAC). The Northwest Seaport Alliance has hired Zachary Thomas to head its Operations Service Center and promoted Bob Meyer to lead port operations and manage safety. Allan Baydala will retire as chief financial officer of the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority at the end of 2016.

A groundbreaking ceremony on July 14 marked the beginning of construction of Oil Dock 15 on the north side of the Inner Harbor in the Port of Corpus Christi, just six months after the U.S. government lifted its crude oil export ban. The governments of Canada and New Brunswick have agreed to invest more than C$136 million to modernize and consolidate Port Saint John’s Rodney and Navy Island terminals, allowing them to accommodate larger vessels.
June container throughput at the Port of Long Beach increased 3.4 percent, boosting the first half total to roughly last year’s 3.3 million TEUs. First half 2016 data for the Port of Los Angeles show container movements amounting to 4.1 million TEUs, an increase of 5.9 percent from January-June 2015. The Port of Virginia reports a fiscal year container traffic total for 2015-16 of 2.6 million TEUs, a 2.5 percent increase from FY 2014-15. The port anticipates calls in the coming months by growing numbers of neo-Panamax container vessels in the 10,300 to 12,000 TEU capacity range.

MOL Benefactor became the first vessel to reach the Port of Savannah via the new locks of the expanded Panama Canal when it docked at Garden City Terminal on July 13. With a container capacity of 10,100 TEUs, it was also the largest ship ever to call the Georgia port. Hapag-Lloyd has added Port Everglades call to its Mediterranean Gulf Express (MGX) service, a move the port says will boost its container volumes by 300 to 400 TEUs weekly.

A partnership supported by the Port of Cleveland launched a coastal restoration project July 11 at the Cleveland Lakefront Nature Preserve. The preserve was created as a confined disposal facility for sediment dredged from the Cuyahoga riverbed. Port Everglades has signed a partnership agreement with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to study air emissions. EPA's Office of Transportation and Air Quality will work with Port Everglades to coordinate research and modeling encompassing all port-related operations, technologies and anticipated growth scenarios.
