America’s waterborne commerce fell in 2015, down 2.9 percent to
2.28 billion short tons from the prior year’s 2.35 billion short tons,
according to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Waterborne
Commerce Statistics Center. Tonnage declines afflicted exports and imports
as well as most categories of domestic cargo. The Port of Virginia®
reports container volumes, at its Hampton Roads terminals totaled 236,155 TEUs
in November, an increase from last year of 16 percent. That gave the port its
second busiest month ever and its tenth consecutive month with a TEU count in
excess of 210,000.

History was made November 30, when six cruise ships carrying a record 24,117 passengers docked in Port of San Juan. The previous record 17,847 cruise passengers – was set February 25, 2015. Royal Caribbean International (RCI) will offer cruises to Cuba from Port Tampa Bay, beginning April 30, 2017.
The board of commissioners of the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey on December 8 approved the agency’s 2017 budget consisting of $3.1 billion for operating expenses and $2.9 billion for capital projects, including "state-of-good repair" work and new construction at its bridges, tunnels, terminals, airports, seaport and PATH system.

Four new Super Post Panamax ship-to-shore cranes arrived December 5 at Georgia Ports Authority’s Garden City Terminal, bringing the Port of Savannah's total to 26. Port Tampa Bay announced December 8 the opening of a new, multi-use cargo berth in an area known as East Port. Sited on 20 man-made acres and featuring 14-inch reinforced concrete, the all-purpose berth and upland can handle container, ro/ro and bulk cargo.

The Oregon International Port of Coos Bay has committed $25,000 toward Southwestern Oregon Community College’s effort to build a new Health & Science Technology Building on the Coos Bay campus. The port’s donation will be pooled with other community funds toward the $16 million construction cost of the 48,000 square-foot facility. Local workers earned $6.5 million while working on Port of Oakland construction projects in 2016. More than 60 percent of those who worked on port projects live within Alameda and Contra Costa counties. That beat the port’s annual local hiring goal of 50 percent.
