The Florida Ports Council’s Florida Seaports: High Performance – 2017-2021 Five-Year Florida Seaport Mission Plan provides updated figures on international trade, cargo data and cruise activity at Florida’s seaports and forecasts of investment requirements. The Northwest Seaport Alliance reports container volumes at its Seattle and Tacoma terminals remained steady in April as the new ocean carrier alliance deployments took effect. A shipping industry trend toward bigger container vessels is evident at the Port of Oakland, where vessel traffic through April of calendar year 2017 declined even as container throughput increased.

In conjunction with Infrastructure Week (May 15-19), AAPA co-hosted a freight transportation industry Influencer’s Roundtable with the Ports of Indiana in Indianapolis, co-hosted a Congressional Ports Caucus briefing on Capitol Hill, and supported the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s 5th Annual Global Supply Chain Summit. In addition to supporting these three events, AAPA highlighted Infrastructure Week via its Twitter and Facebook networks, using illustrated messages that showcase the value of federal investments in freight transportation infrastructure to the economy, jobs and international competitiveness.
Port Manatee is now a certified member of C-TPAT the Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism, a voluntary supply chain security program sponsored and administered by U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

Work has begun at the Port of Oakland on a 9-month project to raise the height of four 366-foot tall ship-to-shore cranes by 27 feet. The taller cranes will be able to reach containers stacked high above deck on neo-post-Panamax ships.

Some 5,500 containers (more than 10,000 TEUs) were moved to and from COSCO Development during the ship’s 30-hour call at the Port of Savannah. That set a Savannah port record and accounted for more than half the volume transported by the 13,092-TEU ship during her epic visit earlier this month to the U.S. East Coast.

Port Canaveral has been named an official participant in the Southeast U.S. In-transit Cold Treatment Pilot Program by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service. The designation allows entry of in-transit, cold treated containers of agricultural products originating in South America.

Hans-Mill Corporation, a manufacturer of metal and plastic household products, will soon open a state-of-the-art manufacturing center near JAXPORT’s North Jacksonville marine terminals. The Port of South Louisiana reports that Noranda Bauxite & Alumina will invest $35 million to expand and upgrade its alumina refinery in St. James Parish.

The Port of Long Beach awarded $53,500 in scholarships to 34 local college and high school students pursuing careers in international trade and goods movement at a "Celebrating Education" event earlier this month.

The Port of Los Angeles and GE Transportation have been working together since last November to build a platform that digitizes maritime shipping data and makes it available to cargo owners and supply chain operators through secure, channeled access.
