Sabine Neches Navigation District was formed in 1909 as a political subdivision of the state of Texas and designated manager of the Taylor’s Bayou Saltwater Barrier. Later, that designation included acting as local non-federal sponsor to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for the Sabine-Neches Waterway. The district is tasked by its mission statement "to responsibly manage, advocate for and improve the ship channel and navigable waters of Jefferson County to enhance the economy, environment and quality of life in Southeast Texas."
 
 
   
This has been a banner year for wind turbine cargo at Port Corpus Christi, which anticipates a final count of more than 3,000 large turbine blades and tower sections. The second of five heavy-lift project cargo pieces manufactured in Louisiana was recently exported via the Port of New Orleans to Trinidad through the joint effort of three locally-based entities.
 
The U.S. Department of Agriculture has added North Carolina’s Port of Wilmington to both phases of the Southeast In-Transit Cold Treatment Pilot program. This will allow more direct imports of produce including fruits like blueberries, grapes, apples, pears and citrus from across the Americas and other countries enrolled in the Cold Treatment Program.
 
 
   
A grant from the federal government is helping The Port of Virginia® diversify, grow and expedite the flow of cargo through Richmond Marine Terminal (RMT) and via the Richmond Express barge service. 
 
Port Houston terminals handled nearly 35 million tons of cargo from January through November, a 9.0 percent increase from last year driven by containers and steel imports, With barely a month remaining in 2017, container throughput at the Long Beach has already exceeded the port’s TEU total for all of 2016.The Port of Los Angeles reports container traffic this November reached 924,225 TEUs, an all-time monthly record for a Western Hemisphere port. 
 
Vitol Inc. and Harvest Pipeline Company are leasing a 22-acre/8.9-hectare tract from Port Corpus Christi for development as a crude oil export terminal. Produce importer Sol Shipping Services is expecting to grow its business at Port Everglades under a newly approved five-year lease on a 6.54-acre/2.65 hectare marine terminal and a guarantee to move to a 7-acre site in June 2018.
 
 
   
Carnival Cruise Line’s 2,056-passenger capacity Carnival Ecstasy will launch year-round four- and five-day cruises from the Port of Jacksonville, beginning in May 2019. The 2017 cruise season at the Port of Vancouver (BC) concluded with the sailing of Star Princess from Canada Place terminal on December 16.
 
To assure completion of construction projects on time and within budget, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey will make an important change in how it selects contractors for future construction projects and in how it selects firms to manage and oversee construction on its behalf.
 
John LaRue steps down January 1 as executive director of  Port Corpus Christi and will be succeeded by Sean Strawbridge, the port’s deputy executive director and chief operating officer.  Rodger E. Rees takes over as port director and general manager of the Port of Galveston, effective January 15, 2018. Alex Strogen will be joining the Port of Vancouver USA January 16 as chief commercial officer.
