MARAD is soliciting eligible and qualified training entities to apply for designation as a Center of Excellence for Domestic Maritime Workforce Training and Education (CoE). The application period will be open for 60 days, from October 23 to December 22. Applications should include information to demonstrate that the applicant institution meets eligibility criteria, designation requirements, and attributes consistent with 46 U.S.C. 54102. The Federal Register notice provides detailed information on how to apply.

The Duluth Seaway Port Authority has announced the appointment of Tyrone Walker to the Board of Commissioners, an ironworker with Lakehead Constructors and Ironworkers Local 512. Walker succeeds Norm Voorhees, whose final term on the board concluded in early October. The Port of Oakland has named Robert Bernardo its acting communications director beginning Nov. 10. Bernardo, the port’s media/public relations manager, replaces Communications Director Mike Zampa who retires next month.

The Northwest Seaport Alliance handled 308,682 TEUs in September, the highest monthly volume for the year, but an 11.1% decline compared to last year. Total overall container volumes for the year are down 16.8% compared to 2019. The NWSA handled a total of 2,419,741 TEUs year to date. Loaded imports declined 15%, while full exports decreased 13.9%.
 
 
   
The Port of Long Beach announced it will hold a five-month virtual photography course. PhotoWorks is open to the public, free of charge and will take place through the port’s PhotoWorks Facebook Group. The Port of San Diego has released the revised draft Port Master Plan Update (PMPU) and invites the public to review and provide feedback on the PMPU. Feedback will be accepted through November 17.
 
 
   
The Prince Rupert Port Authority is partnering with SkeenaWild Conservation Trust by investing $50,000 from its Skeena River Salmon Enhancement Program into research that will play an important role in the future recovery of wild salmon stocks in British Columbia. The Centre for Industrial Port Expertise (CEIP) and the Port of Sept-Îles welcomed the vessel Coriolis II last month on an oceanography mission to collect samples and data to be used for environmental monitoring of the bay ecosystem in Sept-Îles.

The Port of Trois-Rivières has received federal funding in the amount of $33.4 million from Transport Canada for the construction of Terminal 21. This new terminal is part of the On Course for 2030 development plan and will increase the port’s capacity by nearly 50%, enabling more companies to use its services to reach international markets. 
 
 
   
The Port of Los Angeles has been awarded a $9.88 million Port Infrastructure Development Program (PIDP) grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation. The funding will help pay for construction of improvements at the heavily traveled interchange at Harbor Boulevard/Front Street and the Vincent Thomas Bridge (State Route 47) in San Pedro. The North Carolina State Ports Authority received a $16 million grant for infrastructure improvements at the Port of Wilmington. The PIDP grant will help support the development of a new container gate complex at the Port of Wilmington, as part of an overall five-year $200 million container yard expansion plan. 
 
 
   
CargoM, the Port of Montréal and their partners are ramping up to deploy the priority cargo handling system, CargO2ai, which uses artificial intelligence to quickly identify, prioritize and deliver critical cargo that Canadians need. The Port of New Orleans and Gulf Stream Marine (GSM) announced that GSM will begin operations at Alabo Street Wharf as a new Port NOLA tenant. GSM joins Coastal Cargo, Empire Stevedoring and Ports America in offering breakbulk and heavy-lift cargo services at Port NOLA.
 
One of the world’s top international forest product producers has signed a new contract with the Maryland Department of Transportation Maryland Port Administration that will significantly expand its operations at the Helen Delich Bentley Port of Baltimore. The Port of Montréal joined fellow chainPORT members to launch a Playbook entitled Leveraging Digital Solutions for Crisis Management. Aimed at supply chain executives worldwide, the Playbook draws on the experience of port authorities by providing an inventory of best practices in digital solutions in response to the pandemic.
 
 
   
The Port of Montréal welcomed for the first time the container ship OOCL St. Lawrence, one of the largest container ships to call at the port. The crew was presented with a painting of a mooring bollard to mark the inaugural voyage to Montréal.
 
 
   
The Port of Virginia is preparing to expand its rail capacity and will be using a $20 million federal grant to reconfigure and double the size of the on-dock rail yard at Norfolk International Terminals.
