It is with a heavy heart that AAPA shares the unexpected and sudden loss of Shimrit Perkol-Finkel, CEO of ECOncrete. A female entrepreneur in STEM, Shimrit’s vision and legacy will long inspire, including her encouraging words in a recent Forbes interview: "Go with your passion, no matter what. Go study, knowledge is power, and use it to make a positive change in this fragile world.” AAPA and staff offer their heartfelt condolences to all who knew and loved Shimrit as they navigate through this difficult time.

The Port of Québec announced its plans to develop a new urban park in the Baie de Beauport sector. The project, estimated at over $2 million, will complement other community recreational and tourism developments announced as part of the Laurentia project. Several hundred trees and shrubs will be planted to green the recreational and tourist zone, and help improve air quality in the surrounding neighborhoods.

Building materials company and port tenant CEMEX USA announced it is making improvements to its cement terminal at the Port of Palm Beach as part of the process to recommission the operation, which has been inactive for more than 13 years, and further strengthen its supply chain to service its Florida customers.

Officials from the Port of Los Angeles and the Port of Nagoya, Japan, gathered for a virtual conference to discuss collaboration on environmental and sustainability project priorities shared by the sister ports. The two international trade gateways approved a Memorandum of Understanding last year to cooperate and share information more regularly on environmentally related issues. The Port of Vancouver USA introduced its Climate Action Plan webpage, which supports the current work to identify specific actions to reduce its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. In addition to announcing the webpage, the port is inviting the community to share suggestions and ideas for actions to reduce GHGs.

A 'Topping-Out' ceremony celebrated Wharton-Smith Construction Group’s completion of the Roger F. Wicker Center for Ocean Enterprise located near the Port of Gulfport’s North Harbor site. The Center for Ocean Enterprise will encompass nearly 62,000 square feet and will include administrative offices, classrooms, laboratories and storage areas.

An unseasonable surge in cargo lifted the Port of Long Beach to its busiest February on record. Dockworkers and terminal operators moved 771,735 TEUs in February, a 43.3% uptick from the same month last year, the largest year-over-year increase for a single month in the port’s 110-year history. PortMiami processed 113,835 TEUs in January 2021, an increase of 21.02% from the 94,064 TEUs processed in January 2020, the most active month ever recorded.
