Experts from the U.S. Coast Guard Headquarters and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security will be on hand at the 2021 AAPA Security Seminar and Expo, July 14-16, to address threats faced by the maritime industry and what the federal government is doing to help. Briefings will include the dangers posed by both state and non-state actors and will explain targeting methods, anticipated trends and mitigation methods. High level panelists will also discuss the importance of creating port cybersecurity plans and new developments for the National Maritime Cybersecurity Plan.

The Port of Galveston could be the first cruise port in the United States to host cruise passengers since March 2020 when sailings were suspended due to COVID. Carnival Cruise Line’s measures to resume sailing have been approved by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which gives Carnival the green light to restart sailing from Galveston as early as July 3.

The Prince Rupert Port Authority (PRPA) is revitalizing the Seal Cove Salt Marsh as part of a habitat restoration project that will also improve recreational waterfront access for the public. The $4 million project is fully funded and managed by PRPA on land provided by the city of Prince Rupert. Since breaking ground in February, crews from Coast Tsimshian Northern Contractors Alliance, a local First Nations joint venture, have leveled and graded the site, installed underground services, and begun restoring the mouth of a freshwater creek.

For the first time ever, the Port of Palm Beach is partnering with the Health Care District of Palm Beach County to offer six free hands-on “Stop the Bleed” training courses over a two-day period. Port Freeport welcomed the M/V DOLE AZTEC at the Velasco Container Terminal on its first call to the United States. Port Freeport Executive Director/CEO Phyllis Saathoff, Port Commission Chairman Shane Pirtle, and Port Commissioners presented a plaque to commemorate the occasion to Master of the Vessel, Captain Kazimir Botica, and to Dole’s Operations Finance Manager Stephen H. Hylton and Freeport Terminal Manager Chris Noble.

The Port of Kalama recently added another impressive milestone to its resume as it exported more soybeans than any other West Coast port in the U.S. last year, according to a recent report from the Pacific Merchant Shipping Association. Combining totals from the port’s two grain elevators, TEMCO and Kalama Export, the Port of Kalama exported nearly 5 million metric tons of soybeans, or 33% of all U.S. West Coast soybean exports.

The Port of Baltimore reported double digit increases for key cargo in April compared to low points during the pandemic. In April, 34,672 autos and light trucks moved through the port’s public docks, a 97% increase compared to May 2020. April figures also showed the port handled 85,405 tons of heavy machinery, up 73% compared to the category’s low point in June 2020.

The U.S. Great Lakes Saint Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation (GLS) announced its Pacesetter Award recipients for international cargo tonnage increases during the 2020 shipping season. The Ports of Indiana-Burns Harbor was one of eight ports in the U.S. to earn the distinction, which marks the 13th time the Great Lakes port has earned the Pacesetter Award. The most recent was in 2018.

Mariners aboard cruise and cargo ships docking at Port Everglades are receiving COVID-19 vaccinations through partnerships that include the Florida Division of Emergency Management (FDEM), the port, Seafarers’ House, Celebrity Cruises, Holland America Line, Princess Cruises and Royal Caribbean International. More than 1,570 mariners aboard some 25 cruise and cargo ships have been vaccinated over the past two weeks. International ship crews arriving at the Port of Long Beach and neighboring Port of Los Angeles are receiving COVID-19 vaccinations as part of an ongoing partnership between the Port of Long Beach, Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services and the National Guard. So far, 452 crewmembers on 27 ships visiting San Pedro Bay have voluntarily received the one-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine.
