The Port of Oakland reported a 26% jump in containerized imports last month compared to May 2020. The port handled the equivalent of 1.08 million 20-foot containers from January through May, an all-time high. At that pace, Oakland's annual volume could surpass 2.6 million boxes for the first time ever in 2021. The Port of Virginia in May set a new record for monthly TEU volume having handled nearly 315,000 units and in doing so surpassing the previous record by nearly 30,000 units. Contributing to the month’s volume was the CMA CGM Marco Polo, which at 16,000-plus TEUs is the largest container ship to ever call The Port of Virginia and the U.S. East Coast.

Another new, towering ship-to-shore crane (STS) is coming to the Port of Oakland this week. The crane will be delivered to the Everport marine terminal at Oakland run by Everport Terminal Services, Inc. (ETS). The new ZPMC crane has a lift height from the dock of 170 feet. The Port of Stockton purchased two Liebherr 550 Mobile Harbor Cranes to improve operational efficiency and expand its cargo handling capabilities. The new cranes make it possible for vessels to carry heavier cargo than their own cranes can safely handle. In addition, the two Liebherrs are part of an ongoing program to replace and enhance cargo handling equipment as a key strategy to achieving the goal of becoming a carbon-neutral port.
