A new leader takes the helm at the Port of Pensacola. The City of Pensacola has selected Clark Merritt as the new port director, responsible for overseeing operations at the port including budgeting, tenant management and port development. Merritt replaces former port director Amy Miller, who now serves as deputy city administrator for the City of Pensacola. Merritt has served as the deputy port director since October 2019, after starting with the Port of Pensacola in 2013 as the port business development manager.

The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority announced five new electric rail-mounted gantry cranes, purchased by DP World, will arrive on a heavy load carrier vessel at the Centerm terminal this week. Built in Shanghai, China, using the latest technology and innovation in crane construction, these cranes will be used to load containers onto rail cars within the terminal.

The Port of Hueneme celebrates the completion of its harbor deepening project, a milestone that has been in the works for more than two decades. Congresswoman Julia Brownley (D-CA) was acknowledged for securing federal funds for the port’s transportation projects. The port utilized a $12.3 million TIGER Grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation to deepen the harbor as well as other projects including upgrading the port’s facilities, pavement improvements and modernizing cargo-handling facilities.

PhilaPort has been selected by the U.S. Department of Transportation to receive a $49 million grant from the 2021 Infrastructure for Rebuilding America (INFRA) program. The grant funds will be used to provide gap funding for the development of a $130 million new multi-use berth at Southport.

Observers stationed atop shipping containers with observation decks keep watchful eyes on marine mammals during dock construction at the Port of Alaska. Construction work is stopped when threatened species are seen in the area, especially the endangered Cook Inlet beluga whales. Loud noises from pile driving in particular could injure the hearing of these protected mammals.

The Port of Savannah handled 478,620 TEUs in May, an increase of 41.9% compared to last year. It was the second busiest month in the port’s history, and the 10th consecutive month of positive year-over-year growth. For the fiscal year to date (June through May), GPA has moved nearly 4.9 million TEUs, putting it on pace to surpass 5 million TEUs for the first time. Total cargo crossing all GPA docks reached 3.8 million tons last month, up 26%.
