AAPA is raising money for port authority staff and their families impacted by Hurricane Ida. Contributions to the Port Employees Emergency Relief Fund can be made through participation in the association’s golf tournament to be held September 26, 2021, in Austin, TX, and through direct donation. More information can be found on AAPA's Emergency Relief Fund webpage. More than $20,000 has already been donated thanks to the Port of Corpus Christi (Corpus Christi, TX), Port Tampa Bay (Tampa, FL) and Georgia Ports Authority (Savannah, GA). The Texas Ports Association plans to raise additional funds through specialty gift baskets raffled off at the AAPA Annual Convention. Created in 2005, the Port Employees Emergency Relief Fund provides assistance following natural disasters to port authority employees throughout the western hemisphere. These are often the much needed first-dollar aid received while an impacted individual is scrambling to provide for their family in terms of food, clothing, shelter, etc., prior to obtaining other support.

In the next issue of Seaports Magazine, we want to recognize some of the people who work in the industry – but haven't necessarily earned any awards for their accomplishments or had a spotlight pointed in their direction. Ports need a team of competent employees in order to achieve their goals – but sometimes there is one person that stands out just a little more when it comes to what he/she contributes. Can you think of someone at your port who is in that category? If so, send us some details and why you think they are a good fit so we can follow up and potentially include him/her in the next issue of the magazine. Note: While geared more toward AAPA member port employees, we welcome submissions from any AAPA member. Send to Shani Calvo, shani@naylor.com no later than Sept. 24.
