The Board of Directors for Port Saint John has announced the appointment of Craig Bell Estabrooks as president and chief executive officer. Over the past decade, Estabrooks has worked in progressively responsible leadership positions at Port Saint John. These roles have included managing both government relations and the strategic planning process and being instrumental in the port’s rebranding. Recently, Estabrooks had been promoted from director to vice president of corporate services, a department that included his former areas of responsibility in government relations and strategic planning but added leadership of the finance, human resources and information technology functions for the port. Estabrooks holds both a Bachelor of Arts (UNB) and Master of Arts (Dalhousie) in political science. He recently achieved alumni status at Harvard Business School having completed its Comprehensive Program for Leadership Development (PLDA).

Chris Connor, AAPA president and CEO, and Mario Cordero, chairman of AAPA's Board of Directors and executive director of the Port of Long Beach, were invited by the White House and attended the event. Chairman Cordero also testified yesterday in a hearing before the House of Representatives' Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure about supply chain challenges. Cordero's testimony acknowledges the dedicated federal funding for ports in the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act to make the critical investments needed for a more resilient supply chain.

PortVision50 is a U.S. based non-profit dedicated to assisting ports and maritime stakeholders learn more about the solutions available to ships to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions based on the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) goals. AAPA has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with PortVision50 to support these efforts. PortVision50 is in the midst of creating a dashboard to help North American ports identify their preparedness for the IMO GHG reduction strategy being developed and other decarbonization efforts within the maritime industry. PortVision50 is looking for ports to participate in the development of this tool. Ports interested in participating in this project should contact Margaret Doyle. In addition, PortVision50 is building a catalog of funding opportunities that ports can apply for to support their projects to reduce GHG emissions.

Limited capacity at marine terminals hampered imports at the Port of Long Beach last month, although volumes were still strong enough to mark the port’s second-busiest October amid an ongoing transition to extended operating hours. Dockworkers and terminal operators moved 789,716 TEUs, down 2.1% from the port’s strongest October on record, achieved in 2020. The Northwest Seaport Alliance handled a total of 313,430 TEUs, an increase of 5.6% compared to October 2020. Full imports grew 7.2%, while full exports decreased 9.8%. Year-to-date volumes improved 14.7% to 3,116,785 TEUs, with full imports growing 20.7% and full exports declining 11.2%.

The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority and project partners announced the completion and the opening of the upgraded Mountain Highway underpass on Vancouver’s North Shore. This project, led by the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority, in collaboration with Western Stevedoring, the District of North Vancouver, CN and Squamish Nation will enhance the movement of trade-related cargo through Greater Vancouver, while improving mobility and safety, protecting the environment, and alleviating the community impacts of growing trade.

The Georgia Ports Authority has completed and is now operating the second set of nine new rail tracks for a total of 18 tracks at its Mason Mega Rail Terminal. The expansion immediately increases intermodal capacity to and from the Port of Savannah by more than 30%. Since September 1, GPA has seen a 60% reduction in the amount of time containers are on terminal, as major retailers have begun moving cargo off-terminal at a faster pace.
