The Port of Harlingen Authority is celebrating its 70th year as an operational port. On February 27, 1952, with much fanfare and an estimated crowd of 5,000, the port officially opened for operations and welcomed its first shipment, 500 tons of pipeline. That day set into motion what would eventually lead to a thriving port transporting more than 3 million tons of goods, which generates about $1 billion in economic activity. A new study shows the Port of Hueneme continues to be a vital economic engine throughout the region, according to Martin Associates, a renowned economic consulting company for the maritime industry. Since 2013, tax revenues to local cities and the state increased significantly and jobs grew in record number, of which 95% of the trade-related jobs are in Ventura County.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Hydrographic Services Review Panel (HSRP) Federal Advisory Committee will hold a virtual public meeting, March 9-10, 2022, on issues relevant to NOAA's navigation, observations and positioning services and suggestions for improvements. Meeting information is posted here, and anyone interested in participating can register here. NOAA is also seeking nominations for members to serve on the Hydrographic Services Review Panel. The call for nominations is to fill five member slots for a 4-year term. Nominations are due by April 15, 2022. The panel advises NOAA on operations and research issues related to navigation, hydrographic surveying, nautical charts, tides and currents, geodetic and geospatial data and measurements, Arctic priorities and coastal data and resilience. The Port of Corpus Christi announced an option agreement with Talos Energy and Howard Energy Partners to pursue commercial carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) opportunities on-site at the port. The project known as the Coastal Bend Carbon Management Partnership will have an initial nine-month evaluation to identify CCS project solutions on port-owned lands.

The Port of Los Angeles has unveiled new features to its Port Optimizer™ digital platform that allows shippers, cargo owners, terminal operators and others to better predict and plan cargo at the busiest trade gateway in the United States. Developed in collaboration with Wabtec, the Port Optimizer is a cloud-based information portal that digitizes maritime shipping data for supply chain stakeholders.

The Port of Los Angeles has announced the appointment of Dina Aryan-Zahlan as chief harbor engineer to lead the port’s engineering division. Aryan-Zahlan replaces David Walsh who retired in December 2021. Aryan-Zahlan most recently served as the port’s assistant chief harbor engineer since 2015, where she oversaw the planning, development and design of infrastructure and facilities. PhilaPort has recruited Ryan T. Mulvey as its new director of government and public affairs. Mulvey comes to PhilaPort with 15 years of management experience, having held chief of staff positions in both the Pennsylvania Senate and Pennsylvania House of Representatives. Mulvey also worked for the First Judicial District of Pennsylvania.

The Port of Long Beach has been named the “ Public Partner of the Year” by the Inland Empire Economic Partnership in acknowledgment of efforts to support business development and create jobs in the Inland Empire, an important link in the global supply chain. The accolade was accepted at the organization’s annual awards ceremony in Ontario, Calif., last month by Port of Long Beach Executive Director Mario Cordero.

Griff Lynch, executive director of the Georgia Ports Authority, delivered his 2022 State of the Port address last week that attracted a capacity crowd at the Savannah Convention Center. Lynch unveiled plans to expand the port’s container capacity by 60%, increasing annual capacity from 6 million TEUs to 9.5 million TEUs by 2025.
