The Port of Corpus Christi announced the Corpus Christi Ship Channel Improvement Project was included in President Biden’s proposed FY 2023 Budget released this week under the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Coastal Navigation Construction category. The proposed funding amount of $157.3 million is the largest allocation from the federal government compared to prior years’ budgets.

This week U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg and U.S. Secretary of Labor Marty Walsh headlined AAPA’s Legislative Summit: Now We Build! in Washington, D.C., before an audience of nearly 200 key U.S. policymakers, supply chain leaders and port industry leaders. Buttigieg and Walsh both lauded the hard work of seaports and port workers navigating the challenges of operating throughout a pandemic and historic supply chain disruption. They also voiced the enthusiasm of their agencies to working with industry to get the newly approved infrastructure funds moving quickly so that ports can start building sooner.
Summit attendees also heard from Sen. Roger Wicker (R-Miss.), Senior Advisor and White House Infrastructure Implementation Coordinator Mitch Landrieu, Four-Star General Stan McChrystal, Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan, Federal Maritime Commission Chairman Dan Maffei and Assistant Secretary of the Army for Civil Works Michael Connor. On the final day of the event, AAPA corporate members carried the message of “Now We Build” to Capitol Hill and met directly with lawmakers. The Prince Rupert Port Authority (PRPA) announced its financial support in the amount of $10,000 for the Village of Burns Lake’s Regional Mapping Project through PRPA’s Export Development Fund. The fund supports the planning, development and implementation of economic development opportunities along the Prince Rupert Gateway.

The Greater Lafourche Port Commission (GLPC) recently signed an MOU with the Bayou Lafourche Fresh Water District (BLFWD) to extend its contract for the collection and disposal of debris in Bayou Lafourche from the Intracoastal south to Golden Meadow. GLPC Executive Director Chett Chiasson said, “These are the type of partnerships we love because it shows how agencies such as ours can collaborate successfully to benefit our community in very meaningful ways.”

The Port of Long Beach announced its data-sharing project, the Supply Chain Information Highway, has quickly moved from concept to the testing phase. Developed for the Port of Long Beach by St. Louis-based UNCOMN, the software platform enables cargo shippers and the supply chain to track cargo through data delivery to their systems and optimize decision-making along the way.

Baumer Food Inc.’s President Pepper Baumer joined Port of South Louisiana’s Executive Director/CEO Paul Matthews to renew their lease agreement at a ceremonial signing and were joined by community leaders, business and Baumer Foods representatives, port commissioners, and staff.
