AAPA celebrates the long career of Jim Walker, director of navigation policy and legislation, as he retires from the workforce. Jim was responsible for handling waterside infrastructure issues and relevant legislative and regulatory matters, including AAPA’s Quality Partnership Initiative (QPI) with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. He also served as staff liaison to the Harbors and Navigation Committee. Following a 36-year career with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Jim's responsibilities at AAPA were considerable and included AAPA's efforts to improve navigation policies, legislation, and funding. The past nine years have seen tremendous progress in all three areas, largely thanks to Jim's work. AAPA would like to sincerely thank Jim for his dedication, wisdom, workmanship, kindness, and good humor as he transitions into retirement. Jim's legacy at AAPA is invaluable and he will be sorely missed.

Last week, the House Committee on Appropriations approved the appropriations bills for Transportation, Housing, and Urban Development; Energy and Water Development; and Homeland Security appropriations. The full House of Representatives is expected to vote on these bills—and all other appropriations—in the approaching days. The Senate will develop its own version of these appropriations, and the two chambers will then negotiate to reach a consensus. Throughout this process, AAPA continues to advocate for maximum port funding. Check out AAPA's (Government Relations) Advocacy Now Current Events Briefing newsletter for a summary of topline funding numbers and major provisions of interest to U.S. ports.
