Pasha Hawaii’s newest vessel, powered by liquefied natural gas, was christened on September 1 during a ceremony held at the Port of Long Beach. The christening marked the start of regular service of the MV George III, one of the cleanest container ships to call at the port. Members of the Pasha family, port officials, union representatives and maritime stakeholders were in attendance. Chris Connor, AAPA President and CEO, and Cary Davis, Vice President of Government Relations and General Counsel, also attended the ceremony. Golfers will tee off next month at AAPA’s Annual Convention Golf Tournament to raise money for the Port Employees Emergency Relief Fund. Every dollar raised supports the fund, which provides immediate financial assistance to port staff and their families affected by natural disasters. Contributions to the emergency relief fund can be made through participation in the association’s golf tournament on October 17, 2022, in Orlando, Florida, or by direct donation. More information can be found on AAPA's Emergency Relief Fund webpage. Golfers of all levels are invited to join AAPA's golf tournament to be held at the Shingle Creek Golf Club. Created in 2005, the Port Employees Emergency Relief Fund provides assistance following natural disasters to port employees throughout the western hemisphere. These are often the much needed first-dollar aid received while an impacted individual is scrambling to provide for their family in terms of food, clothing, shelter, etc., prior to obtaining other support.

The Port of Los Angeles and a range of elected officials and industry leaders joined U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg on September 7 to celebrate the award of a $20 million federal RAISE infrastructure grant for a critical road-railway grade separation project at the port. Facilitating faster cargo movement, the new roadway configuration will streamline truck access, reduce traffic delays, truck dwell times as well as reduce GHG emissions from idling vehicles.

Ports of Indiana issued a request for proposals (RFP) for professional consulting services for the partially federally-funded project at the Port of Indiana-Burns Harbor located in Portage, Ind. The overall scope of the project includes design engineering services related to the construction of a new truck marshalling yard at the port. Utah Inland Port Authority Director Jack Hedge announced his intent to retire in October. Hedge came to Utah in 2019 from the Port of Los Angeles where he managed a $4 billion portfolio and more than $270 billion in cargo annually. In just over three years at the helm, Hedge is credited with establishing the original policy, programs, and protocols from start-up to functioning state authority and other major milestones for the port. His last day will be October 28, 2022. Ben Hart was appointed incoming executive director during the August 2022 board meeting.

Foreign Trade Zone No. 62 (FTZ) at the Port of Brownsville recorded an increase of 28% for the total value of exports in 2021, surpassing the $5 billion mark for the first time. According to the Annual Report of the Foreign-Trade Zones Board to Congress released on August 29, FTZ No. 62 ranks second in the country with more than $5.2 billion in exported goods in 2021, an increase from the $4.1 billion reported in 2020.

Sailing from the Port of Palm Beach to the Bahamas, Margaritaville at Sea, announced its new groundbreaking “Heroes Sail Free” cruise program, inviting U.S. military service members (active duty and veterans), police, fire, EMS personnel, and educators to enjoy one free cruise fare to the Bahamas. The program is coordinated through a partnership with GovX.com, a military and government ecommerce site for military and first responders.

Konecranes delivered a new, eco-efficient Generation 6 Gottwald Mobile Harbor Crane that is now operating at the Port of Röyttä in Tornio, Finland. The new crane is handling general cargo and containers and is the largest and most modern crane of the six cranes operated in the port by Oy Adolf Lahti Yxpila Ab (Adolf Lahti) and the stevedoring company Oy M. Rauanheimo Ab (Rauanheimo).

The Port of Galveston is partnering with popular navigation app Waze to decrease traffic congestion and make better-informed planning decisions with real-time traffic and roadway data. The free, two-way data share agreement will give port officials real-time data collected directly from Waze users. The port will provide Waze with real-time construction and road closure data, which will help Waze users plan the most efficient routes.

Port Everglades has promoted Christopher (Chris) Marchant to the role of Chief Harbormaster, guiding maritime services for Broward County's multi-faceted 2,190-acre seaport. Marchant has served as Assistant Harbormaster for Port Everglades since August 2021 and as Duty Harbormaster from May 2010. He was also a linehandler with Port Everglades for four years. Alabama Port Authority Director and CEO, John C. Driscoll, announced a new External Affairs team, which will lead communications and government relations for the state port authority. The new External Affairs team will include Maggie Oliver, vice president of communications and federal affairs, Catherine Reaves, vice president of policy and state affairs, and Molly Tillman, director of public affairs. This announcement comes as long-time port authority leader, Judith Adams, is set to retire in December. Adams has served the State of Alabama at the Port Authority for 28 years and been instrumental in the port’s growth.
