Paul Bingham, Director of Global Intelligence and Analytics for S&P Global Market Intelligence, will be sharing his expert forecasts for worldwide trade at the new AAPA Port Administration Management Conference taking place June 6-7 in San Pedro, CA. Bingham will address key commercial indicators in his presentation on The Port Economic Outlook 2023 and Beyond. At S&P, Bingham manages multimodal freight transportation market analysis and forecasting for public and private sector clients. He is the former chair of the U.S. National Academies of Sciences Transportation Research Board (TRB) Freight Systems Group and a member of the TRB Committee on Freight Transportation Economics and Regulation and Committee on Agriculture and Food Transportation. He is the former Chair of the TRB Task Force on the Value of Transportation Infrastructure and the former Chair of the Freight Transportation Data Committee. Paul served on the National Council of the Transportation Research Forum and is a former member of the Editorial Review Board of the Journal of Transportation. The Northwest Seaport Alliance (NWSA) has announced the launch of its 2023 Rail Cargo Incentive Program aimed at driving growth and cost-effective operations in the Pacific Northwest region. The program will increase cargo volumes in the gateway while reducing costs to importers and exporters that utilize the NWSA gateway and their rail partners.

The Prince Rupert Port Authority (PRPA) has partnered with Northern Health to support its Surgical Equipment Optimization Program at Prince Rupert Regional Hospital through a $60,000 commitment from PRPA’s Community Investment Fund. PRPA’s Community Investment Fund has contributed over $630,000 to the purchase of new medical equipment and other upgrades over the past decade.

The first cruise ship of the season, the Sapphire Princess, arrived in Vancouver yesterday, officially starting what could be a record season for the industry locally. A total of 331 cruise ships are scheduled to visit Canada Place cruise terminal at the Port of Vancouver between April 12 and October 24, an increase of approximately 8% compared to 2022.

Port Fourchon announced newly elected Port Commissioner Reggie Ledet was sworn into office at a formal ceremony on April 12, officially taking his place at Seat E during the Greater Lafourche Port Commission’s monthly board meeting. Ledet was chosen by voters of the 10th Ward of Lafourche Parish at a special election on March 25.

Ports of Indiana-Burns Harbor opened the 2023 international shipping season on April 11 with the arrival of Polsteam’s Isadora, a bulk carrier coming from Ijmuiden, Netherlands through the St. Lawrence Seaway and Great Lakes. To commemorate the first ocean vessel of the year, the captain was presented with the Ports of Indiana ‘Steel Stein.’

The St. Bernard Port and Associated Terminals participated in Who Works the Rivers, an activity-based program that teaches teens the importance of the St. Bernard Port and its career opportunities. Local high school students learned about the importance of the maritime industry, history of the port, benefits, levels of employment, income, as well as what it takes to get hired.
