AAPA is excited to announce Paul Anderson, Port Tampa Bay President & CEO, has been named as AAPA’s new vice chair of the Board of Directors. Anderson was nominated and unanimously elected to fill the new vice chair position, during a regular board meeting on March 28 held in conjunction with the Legislative Summit in Washington, D.C. Anderson had been serving on the board as an at-large director. AAPA’s bylaws allow for the appointment of a vice chair at the discretion of the 11-member board.
Anderson is a former Federal Maritime Commissioner and joined Port Tampa Bay as Chief Executive Officer in December 2012 after holding a series of high-profile leadership positions in the public and private sectors. Anderson serves multiple national leadership positions including vice chair of AAPA, chair of the Coalition for America's Gateways and Trade Corridors (CAGTC), as well as chair of the Florida Seaport Transportation and Economic Development Council (FSTED), and chair of the Florida Ocean Alliance.

The Port of Corpus Christi closed its first quarter of 2023 with record tonnage of 49.6 million tons, surpassing the year-over-year period in 2022 by more than six million tons and previous quarterly record of 49.5 million tons set in Q4-2022. Dockworkers and terminal operators at the Port of Long Beach moved 603,878 TEUs last month, down 30% from March 2022. Imports decreased 34.7% to 279,148 TEUs while exports increased 16.9% to 133,512 TEUs. The Port of Los Angeles processed 623,234 TEUs in March, closing out a soft first quarter. For the first three months of 2023, the port handled 1,837,094 TEUs, down 32% compared to 2022, which was the best Q1 in the port’s history. NWSA total container volume for March decreased 27.2% to 240,979 TEUs. Full imports declined 37.2% as imports continue to struggle due to ongoing soft demand and uncertainty around the PMA-ILWU contract negotiations.

Ports of Indiana-Burns Harbor welcomed a visit by Great Lakes St. Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation (GLS) Administrator Adam Tindall-Schlicht to tour the $30 million expansion project made possible by federal grants and to discuss future shipping growth. Ports of Indiana CEO Jody Peacock said, “It’s an honor to have the Seaway Administrator tour our port expansion projects and share his ideas about future opportunities.”

The Port of Redwood City reported strong mid-year financials at its March 22 board meeting with gross revenues up from $4.5 million to $5.1 million, an increase of 13% when compared year over year. Also at the meeting, the Board of Port Commissioners selected CDM Smith as the consultant firm to conduct the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) process on the future Redwood City Ferry Terminal Project.

Port Tampa Bay President and CEO Paul Anderson announced the promotion of Captain Matthew Thompson as its new Vice President of Operations. Captain Thompson previously served as the port’s director of Cruise Operations and Emergency Management. Prior to that, Captain Thompson had more than 30 years of progressive military experience with the U.S. Coast Guard. His new position became effective April 1, 2023.

The Port of Cleveland Board of Directors approved a financing agreement for Bridgeworks’ redevelopment project of the former Cuyahoga County parking garage into a mixed-use building. The project will feature a hotel, residential units (half will be affordable housing), a restaurant and bar, office space, and retail.

Business opportunities at Port Everglades are expanding with the construction of two warehouses that will offer distribution and logistical services. Seagis Property Group reported its 199,624-square-foot development project is 75% complete, and Bridge Industrial anticipates completing its 171,983-square-foot potential logistics facility in the first half of 2024.
