The Transportation Research Board’s (TRB) Seventh Biennial Conference on the Marine Transportation System Innovative Science and Technologies Toward Greater Sustainability will be held June 20-22, in Washington, D.C. Keynote speakers include:
- Dr. Miriam Goldstein, Director of Ocean Policy, White House Council on Environmental Quality, discussing the Biden-Harris Administration’s whole-of-government Ocean Climate Action Plan.
- Bo Cerup-Simonsen, CEO, Mærsk McKinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping, discussing Accelerating Marine Decarbonization: Progress, Challenges and Best Practices.
- Ingrid Irigoyen, Director of the Aspen Institute’s Shipping Decarbonization Initiative, discussing The Role of Demand in Driving the Transition to Zero-Emission Shipping: Cracking the Chicken and Egg.
Panels include representatives from Amazon, Blue Sky Maritime Coalition, Mediterranean Shipping Company, and other important stakeholders from the public and private sector involved in sustainability efforts in marine transportation. On Thursday, July 20, attendees of AAPA’s Smart Ports Seminar & Expo will have the opportunity to tour the Verizon Innovation Lab and see live demonstrations of 5G technologies in action at the Smart Port of the Future. Participants will receive an exclusive, one-of-a-kind tour, not open to the public, hosted by Verizon.
Visitors will experience a simulation of the life of a smart port with over 9 hands-on demonstrations featuring all that can be done with 5G technology, including:
- What is a digital twin and how it can be used by a port.

Green Marine recently elected a record number of female directors to its board during its annual general meeting. Women now hold five of the nine board positions. Of those five is newly elected Deborah Deluca, Executive Director of the Duluth Seaway Port Authority and AAPA Board Director, who was appointed to fill the seat vacated when Craig H. Middlebrook retired from the Great Lakes St. Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation. “It’s great to see this first at Green Marine as our historically male industry continually embraces change on all fronts to become more sustainable and reflective of our communities at large,” said David Bolduc, Green Marine’s President.

Vancouver Fraser Port Authority CEO Robin Silvester has announced that he will be leaving the port authority after more than 14 years leading the organization. “It is time for a new challenge for me, and to make space for a new leader at the port authority after the recent federal environmental assessment approval of the Roberts Bank Terminal 2 Project, the most significant strategic priority of the last decade,” said Silvester. He will be staying on to support the leadership transition. The Board of Directors will undertake a global search for a new President and CEO.

The Los Angeles Board of Harbor Commissioners has approved a $2 billion FY 2023/24 annual budget for the Port of Los Angeles. The financial blueprint calls for increased investment in port operational and public-access infrastructure, as well as support for a range of industry leading sustainability and decarbonization initiatives.

The Port of Québec announced a partnership with 2 Degrés, a business incubator specializing in clean technologies. This two-year partnership is part of the Port of Québec's Vision 2035 unveiled earlier this year, in which innovation is at the forefront.

The Port of Bellingham sought public input on a Draft Climate Action Strategy to address the urgent challenges of climate change with an early focus on greenhouse gas mitigation and sea level rise. After reviewing public comments, port staff will finalize the Climate Action Strategy for consideration of formal adoption by the Port Commission in August.

The Norcan petroleum terminal located in the east end of Montreal recently announced that it has signed a strategic partnership to increase imports of ethanol, a lower-carbon alternative fuel. This initiative will help reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from vehicles in Quebec, furthering efforts by the Port of Montreal and its partners to accelerate the energy transition and fight climate change.

Paranaguá Port, located in Paraná, is the first Brazilian public port to achieve the international EcoPorts certification, an initiative of the European port sector on environmental management. The recognition is granted by the European Sea Ports Organization (ESPO) and positions the Port of Paraná as a global reference in environmental management and best practices.

Port Freeport and a host of guests joined together for a ribbon cutting ceremony marking the completion of the Berth 8 Construction Project. The construction contract with McCarthy Building Companies, Inc. was approved in November 2019 for the expansion of Velasco Container Terminal. McCarthy submitted its completion notice last month marking the end of the three-year $146 million project.

MSC has chosen Port Everglades for its Santana Service, which connects Southeast Asia to the port as the first U.S. stop on the around-the-world route. Port Everglades was selected based on its service reliability, fluid terminal operations, cost-savings, and geographic location to major distribution centers serving south Florida.

Rose Haddad Snell was officially sworn in as a member of the Port of Harlingen Authority Board of Commission June 1, during its regular meeting. Snell was appointed to the Place 1 position recently vacated by long-time commissioner Bryan Duffy. She is also the first female to serve as a commissioner in the Port’s history. The Port of New Orleans (Port NOLA) welcomed maritime industry veteran Matthew Wypyski to the executive team as Chief Operating Officer (COO). Wypyski’s leadership experience includes 32 years as a senior operating and general management executive leading port authority staff, marine terminal and stevedore operating companies, as well as liner operations.

The Port of Long Beach will update the public on plans for the Pier B Rail Facility Project during a virtual community meeting on June 21. The planned Pier B On-Dock Rail Support Facility will enable the port to shift more cargo to on-dock rail, where containers are taken to and from marine terminals by trains. Moving cargo by on-dock rail is cleaner and more efficient, as it reduces truck traffic.
