The Secretariat of the Inter-American Committee on Ports (CIP) of the Organization of American States (OAS) and the Latin American Delegation of AAPA have announced the 2023 AAPA – CIP Port Industry Award of Excellence: Recognizing Outstanding Ports in the Americas.
Committed to promoting integrated port development, the CIP Secretariat and AAPA will recognize those ports in the region that demonstrate excellence in their operations and contribute to the economic and social prosperity of the societies in which they operate, in the following categories:
- Technology and Innovation
- Port Infrastructure Development
- Public-Private Partnerships

After a rigorous three-month search that contemplated candidates from across the country and industry, the Port of Corpus Christi Commission voted in a special meeting on September 6 to promote Chief Financial Officer Kent Britton as full-time Chief Executive Officer. Britton has served as Interim CEO since June 1, 2023. “The Port of Corpus Christi is an incredible asset to the Coastal Bend region, and I am honored to continue its stewardship with the support of our world-class leadership team,” said Kent Britton, Port of Corpus Christi Chief Executive Officer.

The Port of New York and New Jersey moved a total volume of 725,479 TEUs (400,470 containers), its highest monthly total since October 2022, bringing its year-through July total to 4,465,823 TEUs (2,481,114 containers). The monthly number represents a 6.5% decrease from July 2022, when 776,167 TEUs (431,364 containers) moved through the port.

The Port of New Orleans was awarded $947,280 in recently announced Port Security Grant funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to support the expansion and enhancement of emergency services for Port NOLA’s maritime and industrial operations. With this funding award, Port NOLA will invest in physical and technological upgrades to the Port’s Emergency Operations Center which serves as home base during hurricanes and other significant incidents.

Two containerships crossing paths at the Port of Brownsville’s ship channel in June illustrated the modern-day ship life cycle. As Pasha Hawaii’s newly completed MV Janet Marie containership docked at Seatrium AmFELS’ shipyard, Pasha’s retired SV Horizon Pacific containership was drawn by Signet Maritime’s tugboats to berth at SA Recycling/SteelCoast for recycling. Known as the premier ship recycling port of the United States, securing 85% of the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration (MARAD), and U.S. Navy contracts, the Port of Brownsville is also the primary shipbuilding port of Texas.

The Port of Montréal has teamed up with Mely.ai, a startup specializing in data retrieval for automated solutions, to develop a new Intelligent Document Processing (IDP) tool based on artificial intelligence and focused on data transparency. “We want to be able to find the needle in the haystack,” said Simon Savard, Analyst, Business Intelligence and Innovation at the Port of Montreal.
