DCA Consideration of Building Codes to Improve Construction for Hurricanes, Tornadoes and Floods

The Department of Community Affairs Board will consider adoption of an optional Disaster Resilient Construction Code (Appendix R of the Georgia State International Building Code and Appendix R of the Georgia International Residential Code) on Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. at the Georgia Department of Community Affairs, 60 Executive Park South, N.E., Atlanta, Georgia 30329-2231.

If adopted by the Board, they would become effective on Jan. 1, 2013.

Counties would have the option of adopting these building codes through local ordinance. These codes would require construction to be more flood resistant and high-wind resistant. They also cover storm shelters, safe rooms and refuge areas.
