The Association County Commissioners of Georgia Civic Affairs Foundation awarded 40 grants to 36 counties in February for the 2020 Georgia County Internship Program (GCIP). The GCIP provides opportunities for recent college graduates, college students, and dually enrolled high school students 16 years of age or older, to obtain first-hand job experience in county government through county internships. To date, 425 internship opportunities have been made available in 75 counties through the program.
Twenty-nine grants were provided to twenty-seven counties through the general grant category for projects ranging from GIS and digital media to environmental management and community development. Funding for these grants were provided through personal and corporate giving, proceeds from the annual Foundation golf tournament, and grant funds provided through the Georgia Power Foundation.
The Verizon Foundation provided grant funding for up to eight grants to be given to rural counties with a population of 55,000 or less that had previously not participated in the GCIP. Baker, Cusseta-Chattahoochee, Brooks, Emanuel, Upson, Warren, and Wilkinson counties received the Verizon Foundation grants.
For the second year in a row, grants have been provided to honor the work of Dr. Jim Kundell and former Fulton County Commissioner, Joan Garner. Henry County and Oconee County received Kundell Environmental Management grants for a green infrastructure stormwater project and a water resource project. Hall County received the Garner Health and Human Services grant for a juvenile court teen summit and resource closet project.
