Lillie Gore is a master’s candidate in criminology at Georgia State University. During the summer, she interned with the Augusta Judicial Circuit Office of the Public Defender. In addition to learning about criminal defense and interacting with clients, Gore’s main focus was collecting data to demonstrate the positive impact of the Augusta Circuit’s pretrial diversion program on jail capacity. Gore also tracked the length of pretrial incarceration by providing the courts with available alternatives to holding clients. Gore noted that her favorite part of the internship was helping staff attorneys with case management and developing questions to use. She further noted that she had gained skills and experience with client interviews. When asked if her future career plans involved local government, she enthusiastically answered yes.
