Georgia Forestry Commission Update

Print this Article | Send to Colleague

Hundreds more tree seedlings were distributed by the Georgia Forestry Commission on March 26, the first anniversary of a tornado that ravaged Newnan and left behind some $75 million in damages. Since the 2021 storm, the GFC has replaced about 10 percent of the 567-acre tree canopy loss with containerized trees and seedlings. The agency came to Newnan’s aid immediately after the storm to help clear municipal routes, and provide aerial surveys and Urban Forest Strike Team tree assessments that aided in federal documentation and assisted with numerous recovery events. Find out more about community tree maintenance and emergency assistance from the GFC here.

The GFC has also been responding to an uptick in wildfire activity across the state. Dry, windy conditions have made outdoor burning risky on some days. With reduced rainfall forecast to continue into May, everyone is urged to stay weather aware locally and protect lives and property from wildfire by taking preventive actions now.
